Job Purpose
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
We're looking for an experienced Security Engineer to join our Cyber Security team and play a key role in protecting the applications and platforms that support National Gas.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape and strengthen application security across enterprise, operational technology (OT) and critical national infrastructure (CNI) environments. You'll work with developers, architects, and security specialists to embed security into the software development lifecycle, improve cloud security posture, and help ensure our applications remain resilient against evolving cyber threats.
Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.
About the role
As our Application Security Engineer, you'll be responsible for identifying security risks, improving security controls, and supporting the secure delivery of applications and cloud services across the organisation. You'll act as a subject matter expert, helping teams adopt secure-by-design principles and modern application security practices.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading application security assessments and reviews to identify vulnerabilities and areas for improvement.
- Working with project and development teams to securely design, build, and deploy solutions in cloud environments.
- Supporting the identification, prioritisation, and remediation of application and cloud security vulnerabilities.
- Integrating security tooling into development pipelines and promoting a "shift-left" approach to security.
- Helping manage risks associated with third-party libraries, open-source components, packages, and build artefacts.
- Using and supporting application security testing tools, including SAST, DAST, and Infrastructure-as-Code security tools.
- Managing and enhancing security technologies such as cloud security platforms, web application firewalls, and monitoring solutions.
- Automating security processes to improve efficiency, visibility, and protection.
- Supporting incident response activities, investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Collaborating with Security Architecture, Identity and Access Management, and Governance, Risk & Compliance teams to drive continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
