Security Engineer

We're on the lookout for a Security Engineer to join Nucleus' Information Security team, to help ensure that we are secure by design.


About the Role

The Security Engineer supports the delivery of Nucleus’s technology and business change agendas by translating security requirements into practical, working controls. The function sets the security requirements, while the Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing and validating these controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply security best practice in change and development programmes to stay within risk appetites.
  • Review technical designs against security requirements before designing and implementing controls compliant with industry best practices and Nucleus standards.
  • Collaborate with technical and delivery teams to develop and execute remediation plans addressing vulnerabilities and control gaps.
  • Communicate security risks clearly to stakeholders for informed decisions on managing risks (accepting, mitigating or remediating).
  • Maintain security-related systems and integrations.
  • Validate controls to ensure effectiveness and gather evidence to demonstrate security capabilities.
  • Coordinate security controls across other Nucleus Group members to identify and manage exposures effectively.
  • Assist in audit and due diligence activities to reinforce Nucleus’ secure reputation.
  • Work with Security Operations and Analysis to maintain security standards and ensure effective risk management.
  • Take full responsibility for delivering quality outcomes for customers and embody Nucleus’ Smart, Heart and Courage values.
  • Uphold compliance with the Code of Conduct.

About You

Technical Expertise

Ideal candidates exhibit depth in security technical skills and should demonstrate the following (though not necessarily all):

  • Familiarity with frameworks such as CIS Critical Security Controls, NIST SP 800-53, and NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework, understanding their purpose and application within organisations.
  • Ability to design and execute rigorous test plans with either internal teams or external providers.
  • Strong ability to communicate security risks to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ideally, experience within regulated environments, particularly financial services.
  • Experience applying IT, Infrastructure and Networking concepts to manage security.
  • Hands-on experience in configuring and supporting security-related systems and integrations.
  • Proficiency in managing security controls on cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure and AWS, addressing security posture or protection tools' findings.
  • Judgement and ability to provide constructive, pragmatic security reviews.
  • Skills to translate security risks into practical terms, supporting stakeholders to make impactful decisions while balancing security with operational needs.
  • Independence, attention to detail, and dedication to delivering tasks to resolution.
  • Strong prioritisation and agility amid competing demands, coupled with an ability to work independently.
