Retail Security Officer – Marks & Spencer

About the Role

Join Marks & Spencer as a Retail Security Officer. You’ll create a safe, welcoming environment for our customers and colleagues—not just ensuring security, but also delivering exceptional service. This role requires confidence, exceptional customer focus, and the ability to keep a calm, professional demeanour in fast-paced retail settings.

You’ll embody what security truly means at M&S—calm leadership under pressure, attentive service, and an unwavering commitment to keeping people and premises safe.

Key aspects of the role:

  • Building trust with both customers and colleagues through professionalism.
  • Enhancing the store experience by providing genuine customer support.
  • Protecting assets, detecting threats, and responding effectively to incidents or emergencies.
  • Interacting seamlessly with dominant store technologies (body-worn cameras, digital reporting systems).
  • Adapting quickly to dynamic environments, always acting with composure.

Core Responsibilities

Customer & Colleague Engagement

  • Create a welcoming atmosphere by engaging warmly with shoppers from the moment they enter.
  • Offer helpful, attentive service to customers and colleagues, acting as a professional steward to the store experience.

Safety & Security

  • Prevent shrinkage (loss) and theft through vigilant monitoring and proactive intervention.
  • Respond swiftly to incidents (potential theft, customer disputes, emergencies).
  • Emergency preparedness: Participate in safety drills, adhere to emergency protocols, and assist in secure evacuations.

Requirements

Essential

  • Customer service/chaired interaction with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to stay professional, calm, and decisive under pressure.
  • Professional presence with emotional intelligence and keen situational awareness.

Preferences

  • Previous service in retail or security (for context).
  • A valid SIA licence (desirable but adaptable during recruitment if you train right away).

Selection Criteria

✅ 5 years of uninterrupted UK employment (checkable history required).
