Security Officer
Retail Security Officer – M&S
Location: Gateshead Team Valley Salary: £13.58 per hour Hours: Guaranteed 40+ hours per week
About the Role
Create a safe, welcoming and secure environment for M&S customers and colleagues by joining us as a Retail Security Officer. This role is more than just security—it’s for calm, professional, and customer-focused individuals who take pride in service while ensuring store safety.
In a fast-paced retail environment, you’ll stay alert, respond efficiently, and act confidently to support our businesses and teams. Customer experience is key, so a warm, approachable demeanour is essential alongside vigilance.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Support & Service
- Greet customers as they enter stores, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.
- Provide professional support to both customers and colleagues.
- Act as a trusted visible presence to reassure shoppers.
Security & Loss Prevention
- Prevent loss, including theft and damage, through proactive monitoring.
- Respond to incidents swiftly and professionally, adhering to company policies.
- Identify and mitigate risks, ensuring safe operations in the store.
Digital & Technological Support
- Use mobile reporting systems and body-worn cameras effectively.
- Support store efficiency with store technology solutions.

Emergency Management
- Stay calm under pressure, handling challenging situations with discretion and professionalism.
- Assist with emergency procedures, including evacuation or security alarms.
Teamwork & Flexibility
- Collaborate closely with store colleagues to maintain high standards.
- Adapt to fast-changing retail demands, ensuring readiness for variable tasks.
- Maintain a positive store environment for customers and team members.
Requirements
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Previous security experience (preferred).
- SIA licence (desirable, though not essential if willing to obtain one).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to stay calm, confident, and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Proactive decision-making under limited supervision.
- A genuine passion for customer service and people safety.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to provide a 5-year checkable work history within the UK.
- Willingness to work flynchronously in a dynamic retail environment.
