Security Operations Lead

Your New Role
As our Security Operations Lead, you will be part of our Group Information Security team, leading and evolving our Security Operations function to deliver best-in-class technical security architecture, compliance, incident response, and risk management.
Our Group Information Security team partners across all areas of Digital Science, adding value through delivering all aspects of Information Security, contributing to our strategic growth plans.
As Security Operations Lead, you will:
- Be a key point of coordination for cyber security control implementation and effectiveness reviews.
- Report to our Deputy CISO.
- Work alongside our Technology, Legal, and Operations teams and engage with all functional units within Digital Science.
- Ensure the smooth running of our Security Operations Centre (SOC).
- Serve as the trusted advisory and cyber security partner for the organisation.
- Provide professional development objectives to support this prominent role with broad Security Operations accountabilities.
Candidates must reside in one of the following locations where we have established legal entities: UK, Spain, Germany, and Romania. Applications from outside these areas will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities
Work with stakeholders across the group to ensure:
- Security operations practices, policies, and systems are robust, pragmatic, and aligned with strategic objectives.
- A comprehensive security operations architecture is defined, built, and maintained to address current and emerging threats.
- Cyber security projects are delivered and business security initiatives are coordinated to support the organisation's security posture and strategic goals.
- Expert consultancy is provided to technology teams on both reactive (day-to-day issues) and proactive (strategic) security matters.
- Security Operations documentation, records, and evidence are maintained for assessments, audits, and compliance with legal, regulatory, and customer requirements.
- Adherence to technical security policies, standards, best practices, and customer requirements is enforced.

Specifically:
- Oversee and enhance monitoring, detection, and investigation of security events & alerts.
- Maintain and improve capabilities in *security control automation, logging, alerting, vulnerability scanning, and threat detection.
- Lead incident response procedures, including coordinating incident handling, engaging stakeholders, and driving resolution with follow-up actions*.
- Supervise security testing, including internal scans, third-party assessments, penetration tests, and ensure capabilities and findings are tracked and remediated.
- Integrate security controls and processes across *systems, applications, and cloud infrastructure.
- Develop KPIs, SLAs, and dashboards to measure performance (response times, false positives, remediation progress*).
- Stay updated with regulatory/compliance frameworks (EU Cyber Resilience Act, EU AI Act, ISO 27001, GDPR, PCI-DSS, NIST, NCSC) and evolving threat landscapes and emerging technologies.
- Promote practical cyber security improvements across Digital Science, aligning with *industry standards and security incident learnings.
- Prepare cyber security responses and evidence for internal and external parties.*
Take an active role in information security forums, councils, and communities – inside and outside of the organisation.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Implementation and management experience in SIEM, SOAR, EDR/XDR, vulnerability scanners, DLP, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and data loss prevention.
- Broad knowledge and hands-on experience with cloud platforms, virtualization, and logging infrastructure, including the ability to tune alerts, reduce false positives, log monitoring, and detect anomalies.
- Familiarity with known frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, OWASP.
- Highly experienced in responding to security events/incidents, coordinating with stakeholders and executing post-incident reviews with documented lessons learned.
- Expertise in designing and drafting secure system architecture (networks, applications, identity and access).
- Experience in delivering security-related change programmes (either internal or procured), managing third parties/vendors, scoping, planning, and tracking projects.

Desirable / Nice-to-Haves
- Relevant professional certifications (such as CISSP, CISM, SOC Analyst certifications, ITIL Security, OSCP, etc.).
- Experience working within or alongside a 24/7 Security Operations Centre (SOC).
- Knowledge of threat intelligence integration or using external threat feeds.
- Scripting and automation skills *(e.g., Python, PowerShell, Terraform, etc.) to streamline repetitive tasks.
- Prior experience with regulatory requirements or customer trust uppermost in focus.
