SEMH Teaching Assistant – Plymouth (Temporary, Full/Part-Time)

Location: Plymouth Hours: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM (Monday to Friday) Pay Rate: £9.00 per hour (£90 per day) Contract Type: Temporary, full-time or part-time


About the Role

Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact on young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Five Education is seeking compassionate, patient, and resilient individuals to join our team as SEMH Teaching Assistants.

Our schools across Somerset offer a supportive, nurturing environment where staff work to help pupils thrive—both academically and emotionally. This role provides exceptional training, career progression opportunities, and the chance to develop expertise in behaviour support, mental health awareness, and trauma-informed practice.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 or small-group support for pupils with SEMH challenges
  • Help students manage emotions, behaviour, and social interactions
  • Build trusting, positive relationships with young people who have experienced trauma or disrupted education
  • Engage in classroom activities and reinforce targets from Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and support staff to deliver consistent, structured support

Requirements & Preferences

Essential Skills & Attributes

  • Strong emotional resilience and a calm, patient demeanour
  • A deep passion for supporting vulnerable young people
  • Confidence in handling challenging behaviour and de-escalation techniques
  • High level of initiative and commitment to safeguarding best practice
  • Ability to build relationships while maintaining professional boundaries

Preferred Experience

While not essential, prior experience in:

  • Youth work, mentoring, or coaching
  • Mental health or social care roles
  • Behavioural support or welfare professions
  • Security, armed forces, or public services
  • Supporting at-risk/vulnerable individuals

  • Base rate: £9.00/hour (£90/day)
  • Holiday pay included
  • If no non-voluntary enhanced DBS is provided, we’ll arrange a new one (**£62.70*), refunded after 20 days of service (on the incorrect assertion you place the new DBS on the update service)
