SEN Teaching Assistant | Mainstream Primary School | Hackney | September Start
Full Time | Term Time Only | Hackney, East London
Do you have a real understanding of Autism and a genuine passion for helping children communicate, connect, and learn?
A mainstream primary school in Hackney is looking for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team this September. This is a full-time, term-time-only opportunity in a school that takes inclusion seriously - with state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional training, and real career progression built in from day one.
If you know how to reach a child who is non-verbal, how to build trust where others have struggled, and how to show up consistently for a young person who needs you - this role was written for you.
About The Role
This is a full-time, term-time-only SEN Teaching Assistant position starting September, based in a mainstream primary school in Hackney. You will be working directly with pupils who have Autism, including those who are non-verbal, supporting them to access learning, build communication skills, and feel safe and settled within a mainstream school environment.
Strong knowledge and experience of Autism is essential for this role. If you come from a SEN Teaching Assistant background or have worked as a support worker with individuals with Autism, your experience is directly transferable and we want to hear from you.
This is a school that believes in its staff as much as it believes in its pupils. The training is exceptional, the facilities are leading, and the opportunities to grow your career long-term are very real.
Your Daily Duties
As a SEN Teaching Assistant in Hackney, no two days will look exactly the same. Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Providing dedicated 1:1 and small group support to pupils with Autism throughout the school day
- Using AAC strategies - including PECS, core boards, and Makaton - to support non-verbal pupils to communicate and express themselves
- Working alongside class teachers to implement EHCP targets and individual learning plans
- Supporting pupils with sensory regulation, emotional wellbeing, and social development
- Helping pupils access the National Curriculum through adapted, differentiated, and creative approaches
- Building warm, consistent, and trusting relationships with pupils, parents, and the wider school team
- Maintaining accurate and detailed records of pupil progress and support provided
- Collaborating with teachers, the SENCO, therapists, and families to ensure a joined-up approach
- Supporting pupils during transitions, break times, lunchtimes, and educational visits
- Participating in ongoing training and professional development sessions

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
