Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) – Maternity Cover (Full-Time, Up to 18 Months)
Location: Bournemouth Centre
About the Role We are seeking a passionate, dedicated Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to join our inclusive and supportive team in Bournemouth. This role involves direct teaching, strategic implementation of SEN policies, and collaborative support for students with disabilities and special educational needs (SEN/SEND).
Key Responsibilities
The role of SENCO is dynamic and involves leading on all aspects of SEN provision and inclusion. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Leadership & Policy Implementation
- Develop and oversee the implementation of SWRAC’s SEN strategy and policy with senior managers.
- Attend and lead Team Around the Learner meetings, ensuring tailored support and effective coordination of interventions.
- Hold annual reviews of individual Education, Health, and Care (EHC) plans and statutory advice.
- Conduct provision audits and analyse data to inform interventions.
- Deliver staff training sessions during INSET days.
Assessment & Support Coordination
- Carry out assessments of young people with SEN, including classroom observations and meetings with tutors, parents, and external professionals.
- Work closely with tutors, Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), and external agencies (such as therapists, social care, and psychologists) to develop and monitor individual education plans (IEPs) and provision.
- Collaborate on schemes of work and learning programmes for students with SEND, ensuring differentiation and support strategies are embedded.

Staff & Professional Support
- Provide advice, guidance, and training to tutors and LSAs on SEN inclusive teaching techniques, behaviour management, and support strategies.
- Advise on resource provision for effective SEN support.
- Advocate for the engagement team, ensuring pre-enrolment needs are met.
- Attend SENCO meetings and contribute to the SEND Action Plan.
Reporting & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and SEN documentation.
- Ensure compliance with SEND code of practice and statutory requirements.
- Write statutory advice for SEND assessments and professional reports.
- Liaise with parents and external agencies to facilitate holistic support.
Miscellaneous Responsibilities
- Participate in any additional duties deemed necessary for the role, including flexible working as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
✔ NASENCO or NPQSENCO qualification ✔ Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) ✔ English and Maths at Level 2 or equivalent ✔ Teaching qualification equivalent to Level 5 or higher
Skills & Competencies
✔ Strong commitment to raising attainment for young people with SEN, including direct student engagement and staff support ✔ Ability to develop and apply specialist SEN knowledge, keeping up with national and local policy changes ✔ Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, with an ability to inspire and motivate colleagues ✔ Strong written communication for plans, reports, and staff guidance ✔ Robust organisation and time-management to handle a varied, prioritised workload ✔ High levels of empathy, emotional intelligence, and understanding of different learning needs ✔ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate data and implement strategies ✔ Knowledge of:
- Effective teaching methods for diverse learner needs
- Assessment strategies and their use in differentiating support
- The SEND Code of Practice
- Behaviour management and learning environment best practices

Experience (Preferred)
✔ At least three years post-16 teaching experience ✔ Proven background in monitoring and evaluating SEN provision
