Unlocking the Potential of Every Individual
At BrightTeach, we believe that every individual is deserving of the best education possible, so we connect with our students, helping them to thrive in education and giving them the personalised learning and support they need to become confident, knowledgeable, and fulfilled adults.
We care passionately about providing the best quality tutoring to students with additional needs, through matching the needs, interests, and learning styles of the student with a complimentary tutor. If you find SEND tutoring rewarding and want to make a difference in a student's education, we'd love to hear from you!
About The Role
BrightTeach SEND Tutors offer educational provision on an individual or small group basis to learners with a range of special educational needs. Tuition is offered across the ages from early years through to post 16.
- Tutors will deliver bespoke and individualised lessons designed to support the child or young person’s presenting needs and deliver to their mutually agreed targets/outcomes.
- Tutors will need to be skilled in building a rapport with complex children and young people to enable them to engage in the educational opportunities.
- Tutors will need to ensure that lessons are engaging, personalised, and in line with the requirements set out in the learners assessments and other educational information, i.e. their EHCP.
- Tutors will commonly need to provide pastoral/mentoring support alongside their academic lessons, to ensure appropriate engagement from learners who will often be disengaged from conventional education opportunities.
- Occasionally, some of our more complex children/young people are supported by a multi-disciplinary team, and tutors will need to work in collaboration with that team, spending time understanding the desired pathway for the child or young person.
- Where a child or young person is approaching a key transition point, tutors will be involved in supporting the transition process, sharing relevant information, and supporting the learner in being ready for the next step of their educational journey.
This role is subject to an enhanced DBS. Please review our safeguarding policy for further information: Policies — BrightTeach
Please also ensure you complete our Self-Disclosure Form and upload it alongside your other documents at the point of application. The form can be found at the bottom of this page.
This job specification is based upon the national occupational standards for personal tutoring which can be found here: National Occupational Standards for Personal Tutoring.
Key Responsibilities
- To deliver a personalised curriculum to learners with SEND on an individual and/or small group basis.
- To establish a learner's baseline attainments and prepare appropriate targets in line with the learner’s identified outcomes as described in their associated assessments/reviews (EHCP/PEP etc.)
- To plan the programme of study sessions, the BrightTeach SEND management team will be able to offer limited guidance.
- To monitor, review, and evaluate progress from each session using the BrightTeach monitoring system - LearnTrek. In addition, a termly report will be generated using existing data, and tutors will be required to add at least annual commentary to produce an ‘end of year’ report distributed to parents/carers, young people, and other relevant parties. All reporting/progress monitoring must meet the expected standards set out in the BrightTeach quality assurance process.
- To contribute to other reviewing processes as appropriate; for example, the Annual Review and PEP (personal education plan) for Looked After Children. This contribution may be in writing or by attendance at meetings by agreement of the SEND manager.
- Implement other supportive strategies as appropriate to a learner’s needs, for example, pastoral support, specific literacy programmes, trauma-informed approaches to supporting behaviour etc. (Learners will be matched to a tutor’s existing skills, experiences, and qualifications, and, where required, additional training will be offered by BrightTeach).
- To build and maintain successful relationships with learners, treat them consistently with respect and consideration, and demonstrate concern for their development as learners.
- To build good relationships with parents and report back the learners' progress in an accessible and professionally appropriate manner.
- At all times, to be aware of the individual needs of the learner, ensuring that their risk assessment and any other associated plans are adhered to.
- To develop an understanding of the special educational needs of the learners concerned and how their needs impact upon their ability to learn.
- To individualise learners' access to the lesson and its content through appropriate lesson preparation, clarification, explanations, equipment, and materials.
- To promote independent learning as appropriate to need.
- To ensure learners record work in an appropriate way.
- To help develop study and organisational skills.
- To help build the learner's confidence and enhance self-esteem.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
