Senior Accountant
Southampton | Hybrid | £55,000 to £65,000
About the Role
Build stronger client relationships, not just another set of accounts.
If you've reached the stage where you enjoy working directly with clients as much as producing the technical work behind the scenes, this could be the next step.
An established accountancy practice is expanding its team and is looking for a Senior Accountant to take ownership of a varied portfolio of owner-managed businesses across Southampton. You'll have the autonomy to manage your own clients while working alongside experienced Partners who are keen to develop people rather than simply delegate work.
This is the sort of role where you'll become a trusted adviser, not just another reviewer in the workflow.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Preparing and reviewing statutory accounts for SMEs, limited companies, and partnerships
- Producing corporation tax computations and supporting wider business tax matters
- Acting as the first point of contact for your client portfolio
- Reviewing VAT returns and management information where appropriate
- Supporting cloud accounting solutions including Xero and Sage
- Coaching junior members of the team and reviewing their work
- Spotting opportunities to improve processes and add value for clients

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
