Senior Accountant / Client Manager
About the Role
FHP Accounting, a growing UK practice with expertise in general trading businesses and specialist property accounting (including service charge accounts, RTM companies, and RMC management), is seeking an experienced and proactive Client Manager. This hands-on role requires ownership of a varied client portfolio, acting as the primary point of contact, and supporting the wider team.
The ideal candidate thrives on diversity, excels in client relationships, and stays ahead of industry trends. The role involves close collaboration with the practice principal, management of subordinate team members, and maintaining high business standards. This is a fully office-based position based in Nottingham City Centre, with flexibility offered for full-time or part-time arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
Client Management & Advisory
- Serve as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of clients, fostering long-term relationships
- Address day-to-day client queries (including general tax inquiries) with timely, accurate, and clear responses
- Proactively inform clients of HMRC updates, legislative changes, and industry developments affecting them
- Deliver exceptional client service, exceeding expectations consistently
Accounts, Tax & Compliance
- Lead the preparation and quality review of statutory year-end accounts for clients
- Prepare and review personal tax returns (SA100) and corporation tax returns (CT600)
- Manage VAT return preparation, submission, and compliance
- Process and submit client payroll accurately and on-time
- Assist with service charge account preparation during peak periods

Bookkeeping & Oversight
- Oversee and review client bookkeeping, ensuring coded transactions meet year-end standards
- Directly perform bookkeeping duties as cover for team members, maintaining service continuity
- Auditing bookkeeping for readiness ahead of year-end account preparation
Xero & Client Training
- Demonstrate advanced Xero proficiency, including bank reconciliation, invoicing, VAT and reporting
- Train clients to use Xero from basic to intermediate levels according to business needs
- Act as the internal Xero expert, troubleshooting client queries
Team Support & Workload Management
- Schedule and review year-end preparation work for one direct report, against deadlines
- Provide constructive feedback and professional development guidance to team member
- Help team member prioritise competing deadlines while maintaining service standards
- Efficiently manage own workload, balancing client deadlines and internal responsibilities
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Proven track record in a client-facing accounting role as primary point of contact
- Strong technical expertise in:
- Accounts preparation
- Self-assessment (SA100)
- Corporation tax (CT600)
- VAT returns
- Payroll compliance
- Deep working knowledge of Xero, including client training and support
- Excellent communication skills to explain complex tax matters simply
- Organised, prioritisation-driven, and effective multi-tasker
- Proactive continuous professional development (CPD) focus on HMRC and industry updates
- Experience mentoring or overseeing subordinate team members

Desirable
- Experience in service charge accounts, RTM companies, property management, or residential property accounting
- Professional qualification such as ACCA (consideration for part-qualified or experience-based equivalents)
- Exposure to additional cloud accounting or practice management software

Benefits
- 25 days annual leave, increasing to a maximum 28 days with length of service
- Nuffield Health wellness assessment after 1 year, followed by ongoing checks every 2 years
- Death in service benefit equivalent to 4x salary
- Employer pension scheme with contributions increasing with length of service
Salary scale: £35,000–£40,000, dependent on experience.
