We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role

You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new and unique service in Scotland and the UK. The Thistle Service (Safer Drug Consumption Facility) provides a welcoming, clean and compassionate service for people who inject drugs.

The service operates seven days, 9am to 9pm, 365 days per year. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the wider multi-disciplinary team, providing support to a wide range of individuals. The services provide a wide range of health and psychosocial interventions, as well as linking with third sector and voluntary sector services, to provide person centred care determined by the individual’s immediate needs.

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience of physical and / or mental health care, including Blood Borne Virus, wound care management and trauma. Individuals should have a welcoming and flexible approach by demonstrating an ability to communicate with a person centred, trauma informed and innovative approach to people who use drugs and alcohol.

Candidates must be an experienced First Level Registered Nurse with an active UK NMC PIN. Experience working with people using drugs and alcohol would be advantageous.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location: based in Glasgow City HSCP
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week) and Part-time position (29.88 hours per week) available

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Functioning as a Senior Addiction Nurse within a multi-disciplinary team for a complex patient caseload requiring specialist ADRS treatment and care, undertaking care manager responsibilities for patients care co-ordination when required.
  • The holistic assessment of care needs including risk assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating the care and treatment for individual patients within ADRS and supporting recovery.
  • Carrying out all relevant forms of nursing care pertinent to the needs of individual patients in the least restrictive and disruptive manner as possible.
  • Identifying, coordinating and responding to health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving the mental and physical well-being of patients.
  • Identifying, coordinating and responding to the needs of patients which might be related to vulnerability, gender, health, domestic abuse, adult/child protection and/or self harm.
  • Developing therapeutic relationships with patients and carers with complex/ unstable care needs ensuring that needs are identified and met within a participative framework demonstrating principles of equality, dignity and respect accounting for spiritual and cultural diversity. Working proactively with other agencies/services (i.e. interpreter services) to aid effective communication.
  • Working within agreed competency based parameters and undertaking evidence based psychological therapies / psychological and trauma informed approaches to care with individuals and/ or group settings.
  • Administering prescribed medication/ treatments in compliance with NHS GG&C Policy; monitoring effectiveness of prescribed treatments; monitoring and effective management of unwanted side effects.

Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required to Do the Job

Essential

  • Registered Nurse – Level 1 NMC registration with significant addiction experience.
  • Educated to minimum degree level or equivalent.
  • Evidence of active and ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Specialist knowledge and application of physical and/or mental health nursing care.
  • Specialist knowledge and application of risk assessment and factors impacting on physical and mental health, wellness and recovery.
  • Evidence of supervision and reflective practice as a supervisor.
  • Excellent knowledge of values-based practice.

Desirable

  • Completion of an evidence-based psychological therapies/psychological approaches to care formal programme of study.
  • Actively working towards postgraduate level or equivalent.
  • Completed a recognised student nurse assessor/supervisor preparation programme or registered as same.
