Role Description
The Senior Adult Social Care Lawyer will provide specialist legal advice and representation on all aspects of adult social care law for Reading Borough Council. This full-time, on-site role based in Kingston Upon Hull involves managing a varied caseload, including community care, mental capacity, safeguarding, court applications, and related regulatory matters. - Drafting and reviewing legal documents
- Preparing and presenting cases in court and tribunals
- Advising officers and elected members
- Supporting policy development and decision-making
- Liaising with external partners and stakeholders
- Providing training and guidance to colleagues
- Ensuring that the Council’s adult social care functions are delivered lawfully and in line with best practice

Qualifications
- Professional legal qualifications, such as a Solicitor or Barrister status, with a current practicing certificate and substantial post-qualification experience in adult social care or public law.
- Strong knowledge of adult social care legislation and case law, including Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights, and related safeguarding frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience in managing complex legal caseloads, preparing and presenting cases in court, and drafting clear, robust legal advice and documentation.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills, with the ability to provide pragmatic, solution-focused advice in a public sector setting.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, senior leaders, and external partners.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities, including prioritizing workloads and meeting deadlines under pressure.
- Commitment to ethical practice, equality, diversity, and inclusion, and to delivering high-quality services that safeguard and promote the welfare of adults.
- Experience in local government or social care settings is highly desirable; familiarity with judicial review, public inquiries, and regulatory processes is an advantage.
