Planning Manager – London Gatwick Crown Projects
About the Role
Working directly under the Project Director/Manager as Planning Manager, you will be responsible for the planning function in the project, collaborating with stakeholders to resource, manage, and assure projects and programmes. You will ensure visibility and alignment of programmes with business plans and Performance Commitments throughout.
Applicants with Aviation experience are preferred.
The role involves a scope verification phase for survey and design assurance, followed by ECI (Engineering, Construction & Installation) detailed design and construction. Responsibilities include:
- Tender support
- Procurement
- Construction phase planning (for framework tender support and NTP (Network Train Plan) development)
Project Overview
Costain has been appointed to deliver London Gatwick’s Civils and Building Frameworks, covering key infrastructure upgrades to:
- Highways landside and airside civils (ECI, detailed design, intrusive surveys, construction)
- Highways widening, resurfacing, and TM (Transport Manager) phasing
- Upgrades to drainage, lighting, signage, and signalling
- Buildings and terminal upgrades
Responsibilities
Develop and manage:
- Project and tender programmes (construction sequencing, permits, approval, design)
- Accurate benefit and outcome alignment with programme objectives
- Integration with design and construction teams to maintain financial alignment with the Project/Programme Plan
- Best-practice planning and reporting standards
- Clear vision and adherence to project planning standards/tools/processes

Key duties include:
- Building and maintaining internal and external networks
- Collaborating with senior management to reflect real-time project/programme progress
- Performance data review: identify trends, improve collaboration, and problem-solve
- Quality assurance: peer reviews, deep dives, and issue resolution
Essential Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Strong communication and leadership to drive commitments, improvements, and deadlines
- Proficiency in Primavera P6
- Experience with estimating, scheduling, programming, and risk tools
- High numeracy and analytical skills
- Excel expertise (advanced MS Office skills)
Qualifications
- HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent experience in a planning-related discipline (e.g., engineering, project management)
Desirable Requirements
Technical Experience
- Working knowledge of Power BI (reporting tools)
- Familiarity with relevant Health and Safety legislation
- Industry-specific (aviation experience preferred)
- Experience in programme delivery in highly regulated environments
