The opportunity

We’re building AI that can reason over one of the most complex datasets in existence: the human genome. We’re creating an entirely new AI platform that combines large language models, bioinformatics, and modern backend engineering to solve problems that haven’t been solved before.

As a Senior AI Bioinformatics Engineer, you’ll join a team of senior engineers building the next generation of Sequencing AI. You’ll design and build distributed services, genomic reasoning engines, retrieval systems, and data platforms that enable AI to accurately reason about genes, variants, diseases, medications, and human health.

This isn’t about adding AI to an existing product. It’s about inventing new technology that combines whole genome sequencing, bioinformatics, and AI into a platform that millions of people will use to better understand their DNA.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving difficult engineering problems, writing elegant production code, and turning complex genomic science into scalable AI systems. If you’re equally excited by distributed systems and human genetics, you’ll feel at home here.

Who you are

This role combines two disciplines that rarely exist in the same person: senior AI backend engineering and senior bioinformatics.

You should be capable of joining our AI Team as a Senior Backend Engineer while bringing deep expertise in human whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics. You’re equally comfortable discussing distributed systems architecture, AI infrastructure, and data engineering as you are discussing variant interpretation, genomic databases, and human genetics. We’re looking for someone who genuinely excels in both disciplines.

We recognize this combination of expertise is rare. This role requires someone who has reached senior-level proficiency in both production software engineering and human bioinformatics and is excited to apply both skill sets to build entirely new AI technology.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

AI Backend Engineering

You Have

  • 5+ years designing, building, and operating production backend systems at scale.
  • Expert-level TypeScript with experience owning production services end to end.
  • Strong distributed systems fundamentals - you understand how they’re designed, scaled, and why they fail.
  • Hands-on experience building large-scale data processing systems using technologies such as Apache Spark and processing very large datasets.
  • Deep experience designing high-performance data architectures using PostgreSQL, DuckDB, Redis, and similar technologies.
  • Experience building distributed, event-driven systems using technologies such as AWS SQS, RabbitMQ, or BullMQ.
  • Experience building production AI systems, including retrieval architectures, vector databases, LLM APIs, and AI evaluation.
  • A passion for software craftsmanship, building systems that prioritize correctness, performance, maintainability, reliability, and scale.

Bioinformatics

You Also Have

  • Deep expertise in human whole genome sequencing and genomic interpretation.
  • Extensive experience working with VCFs, genomic annotations, and variant interpretation.
  • Strong knowledge of ClinVar, dbSNP, gnomAD, HGVS nomenclature, transcript databases, and other core genomic resources.
  • Experience building production software that applies bioinformatics and genomic knowledge to real-world clinical or consumer genomics applications.
  • A passion for genetics and applying complex genomic science to build AI systems that help people better understand and improve their health.

What you’ll own

  • Design and build the production AI systems powering Sequencing AI.
  • Develop distributed backend services, genomic reasoning engines, and retrieval systems that combine bioinformatics with modern AI.
  • Serve as the bioinformatics expert on the AI Team, helping shape how genomic knowledge is represented, retrieved, reasoned over, and validated throughout the platform.
  • Design how AI represents, retrieves, and reasons over genomic knowledge to deliver accurate, explainable, and scientifically grounded responses.
  • Build scalable services that enable AI to accurately reason over genes, variants, diseases, medications, and scientific literature.
  • Design high-performance data models, indexing strategies, and storage architectures across PostgreSQL, Qdrant, Redis, DuckDB, and Apache Spark.
  • Develop guardrails and deterministic reasoning layers that keep AI responses scientifically accurate, explainable, and grounded in genomic evidence.
  • Translate complex bioinformatics and genomic knowledge into scalable, production-ready software.
  • Collaborate with Senior Backend Engineers to architect AI systems that are fast, reliable, and built to scale.
  • Work closely with the Bioinformatics team to integrate genomic annotations, interpretation logic, and scientific knowledge into the AI platform.
  • Continuously improve the platform’s scientific accuracy, performance, and capabilities as AI and genomic science evolve.

Why this role matters

For decades, the human genome has been one of the world’s richest sources of health information - but most people have never been able to truly understand or use it.

We’re changing that.

The systems you build will help transform billions of genetic variants, decades of scientific research, and constantly evolving genomic knowledge into AI that people can interact with naturally and trust when making decisions about their health.

This isn’t about building another AI application. It’s about helping create an entirely new category of technology that combines bioinformatics, genetics, AI, and consumer health into a platform that can improve and extend millions of lives.

The technology you build won’t just power Sequencing AI, it will fundamentally change how people understand themselves through their DNA for decades to come.
