I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What Makes This Role Different
This role focuses on improving models themselves. While experience with retrieval systems, knowledge graphs, and AI applications is valuable, the core challenge is building proprietary financial-domain models that outperform general-purpose LLMs on the workflows that matter most to 9fin users.

This role is a great fit if you have:
- Deep experience evaluating, adapting, and deploying open-weight models (e.g., Llama, Qwen, Mistral, Gemma) for production use cases.
- Expertise in:
- Supervised & preference fine-tuning
- Instruction tuning
- Domain adaptation
- Strong experience building:
- High-quality training datasets
- Synthetic training data feeds
- Data flywheels for continuous model improvements
- Ability to design rigorous benchmarks, evaluation frameworks, and regression testing systems for assessing real-world model performance.
- Domain expertise applying AI to complex financial and legal workflows, including:
- Credit, restructuring
- Debt instruments
- Filings, court documents
- Capital markets workflows
- Familiarity with:
- Distributed training
- Parameter-efficient tuning
- GPU optimization techniques
- Inference acceleration strategies
- Skills in:
- Model distillation & quantization
- Cost-performance trade-offs
- Full lifecycle of production ML engineering, including:
- Training pipelines
- Deployment & monitoring
- Strong Python proficiency for production-ready delivery.
- Product mindset with a focus on end-to-end business impact for end users.
- Deep knowledge of AWS’s AI infrastructure.
