Senior AI Engineering Manager
Senior Engineering Manager, Maia Core Team
About Matillion & Maia
Are you ready to shape the future of data?
Matillion is the company behind Maia, the AI Data Automation platform.
In the AI economy, demand for data is exploding. Manual data engineering can’t keep up. Maia fixes that by combining 15 years of data expertise with agentic AI to eliminate the manual work that slows data teams down. Organisations like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack are already using it to deliver real business impact, faster.
We started in Manchester and now we’re global – with teams across the UK, US and India.
We are driven, curious, energetic people who move fast, think big and hold ourselves to a high standard. We’re here to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves. And we’re looking for people who want to be part of it.
About the Role
Maia is Matillion's AI data automation platform – and this is your opportunity to lead the team at the heart of this platform. This is a cross-functional engineering team working at the cutting edge of agentic AI, developing and evolving the core services that power Maia.
As Senior Engineering Manager for the Maia Core team, you will:
- Lead a high-performing, fast-paced, high-conviction group of engineers whose work is central to Matillion’s overall strategy.
- Have direct exposure to the executive team, with decisions your team makes shaping the direction of the product and the company.
- Lead as an engineering leader, but technical credibility is non-negotiable – you must hold your own in a team operating at the frontier of AI engineering, understand agentic AI harnesses, and have first-hand experience using agentic AI tools in an engineering context.
The right candidate leads teams who work agentically by default, navigating the unique challenges and thriving in this environment. Above all, you’ll inspire, motivate, and coach your team to do career-defining work in one of the most exciting engineering domains available.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering management at Matillion is built around three disciplines: People, Service, and Delivery. In this role, you'll lead across all three within a team that operates at the forefront of agentic AI, where the pace is fast, expectations are high, and the impact is significant.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

People
- Support a cross-functional team spanning two distinct groups:
- Define alignment for highly experienced engineers who require less coaching.
- Foster growth opportunities and shape engineering craft for AI-native engineers with huge potential.
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships with Product, Design, Marketing, Customer Support, and Field Engineering.
- The Maia Core team sits at the heart of the platform, making collaboration a critical part of the role.
Service
- Own the core agentic harness that powers Maia and the underpinning services.
- Be responsible for incident management, observability, monitoring, alerting, and service health – foundational disciplines for an enterprise SaaS platform.
- Lead the modernisation of service ownership by adopting AI-powered approaches, which reduce operational overhead while improving reliability and engineering efficiency.
- Set a standard for service ownership across the organisation.
Delivery
- Create an environment that supports fast-paced delivery without compromising quality.
- Continuously optimise team processes to use agentic tooling effectively while putting customers at the centre of every decision.
- Given the strategic importance of Maia, regularly communicate delivery progress and service health to executive leadership.
Requirements
Key Qualifications
- Agentic-first leadership experience: You’ve led high-performing engineering teams operating agentically by default, and fully grasp the unique challenges that come with it.
- Hands-on familiarity with agentic tooling: You’ve used or explored tools like Claude Code or Codex. This isn’t about day-to-day involvement, but about technological credibility in decision-making related to tooling, ways of working, and system design in an AI-native context.
- Strong SaaS and software engineering fundamentals: Comfortable with Java and Python, building cloud-native SaaS systems that prioritise performance, reliability, and privacy. Ability to reason about architecture and engage confidently in technical discussions.
- Exceptional stakeholder management: Must build strong relationships across Product, Design, SRE, and Security, maintaining credibility as a trusted partner across the organisation.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapid change: Must thrive in a fast-evolving, ad-hoc environment, adapting quickly and embracing change rather than seeing it as disruptive.
- Sound decision-making under pressure: Ability to translate strategic direction into clear priorities while making well-informed choices even with incomplete information.
