Senior AI Researcher
Fujitsu Research of Europe (FRE) – Slough, UK

About the Role
Your work will bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical application:
- Innovate relentlessly: Design and validate novel AI methodologies, extending state-of-the-art (SOTA) research into scalable solutions.
- Demonstrate impact: Lead research projects with measurable outcomes—publishing findings, securing patents, and creating technological demonstrators.
- Collaborate globally: Report to both your local Group Manager and our Project Director in Fujitsu’s Japanese Laboratories, ensuring alignment across a worldwide team.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Development
- Stay ahead: Identify, review, and critically assess SOTA AI research aligned with our innovation objectives.
- Pioneer solutions: Develop and evaluate next-generation AI models, including large language models (LLMs) and agentic frameworks.
- Translate theory: Adapt academic research into practical proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and industry-applicable tools.
- Ensure rigour: Conduct rigorous experimentation—benchmarking, ablation studies, and cross-model comparisons.

Knowledge & Impact
- Authorainties: Lead the drafting of high-impact research papers, technical reports, and patent applications.
- Bridge gaps: Work closely with your team to refine research into demonstration projects that showcase Fujitsu’s technological edge.
- Uphold standards: Champion reproducibility and thorough documentation to maintain the highest research integrity.
Requirements
Must-Have
- PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven expertise in AI/ML, with a focus on LLMs or agentic systems—backed by publications, preprints, or patents.
- Elite Python skills: Experience with research-oriented codebases and Git workflows.
- ** Framework mastery**: Proficiency in PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar deep learning tools.
- Analytical rigor: Strong foundation in experimental design, statistical analysis, and model evaluation.
- Communication skills: Ability to explain complex AI concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have
- Experience in fine-tuning LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or evaluation methodologies.
- Knowledge of emerging tools like LangChain, LangGraph, or SmolAgents.
- Hands-on experience with scalable training frameworks (e.g., HuggingFace, Megatron-LM, OpenCode).
- Familiarity with big data architectures or digital twin technologies.

- Contract: Fixed-term (1 year) for maternity cover
- Reporting: Dual accountability to your local Group Manager (FRE) and Japan-based Project Director
