About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Android Developer to work on our world-leading Android app, developed primarily in Kotlin and Java using Android Studio. Our app has a Play Store rating of 4.7 stars, highlighting our commitment to providing a fast, stable experience for users.
Key Responsibilities
You'll contribute to major new features, enhance, and maintain existing functionality for The Guardian’s Android apps. As a Senior Developer, you will:
- Lead development projects and guide others, fostering growth in the team.
- Build and test major new features, alongside maintaining existing ones.
- Work collaboratively using pair programming and engaging with stakeholders, including iOS, server-side, and web engineers, as well as designers, product managers, editorial, and commercial colleagues.
- Drive innovation through product and technical decision-making.
- Participate in weekly hack days to explore cutting-edge ideas.
- Uphold a strong culture of testing and ensure your code is well-constructed.
About You
Essential Criteria:
- Strong expertise in Android development complemented by a passion for continuous learning.
- Proficiency in one or more modern Android development tools such as Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, MVP/MVVM, WebView, Jetpack libraries, and modular app architectures.
- Experience with testing to promote a robust culture of quality assurance. This includes JVM unit testing, instrumented testing, and UI regression testing.
- Ability to work effectively with cutting-edge technologies as well as legacy code.
- Leadership experience or willingness to take on leadership responsibilities in team projects.
- Basic familiarity with iOS development and curiosity to learn more.

Helpful Skills:
- Knowledge of Swift and Objective-C (for iOS) or Scala/TypeScript (for server-side development).

Working with Us
Our developers operate in a hybrid environment:
- 1 day per week in our office (Kings Cross, London).
- 4 days working remotely (optional to spend more time in the office if preferred).
Salary for new Senior Android Developers: £82,000 per year.
