The M25 is one of our Flagship projects in the UK! It is the most used part of the UK Strategic Road Network with it seeing over 200,000 vehicles per day and it’s a critical infrastructure asset for personal and goods vehicles into and around our capital. The network includes around 800 structures and 5 tunnels, so it requires high levels of performance, constant improvement and repairs to keep it operating smoothly.
Job Description
The Senior Asset Engineer role within the Structures & Dartford Asset Management Team supports the management of the M25 structures portfolio which includes a wide range of 3000 No. structures across the network including the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and 5 major tunnels.
This is an important role in developing and managing short, medium, and long-term asset management objectives for these assets aimed to minimise whole life cost whilst meeting contract performance and providing confidence contractual condition criteria will be met during the contract period.
Principle Accountabilities:
- Manage and provide leadership & guidance to a small team of assigned Asset Engineers focused on Structures and /or Dartford Crossing Infrastructure.
- Development of value led technical decision-making processes and procedures to support long-term asset management of Structures & Tunnels.
- Provide lead support in the team for development and implementation of a risk-based strategies for inspection, maintenance & renewal work.
- Development and implementation of asset management, maintenance and renewal strategies for all structure categories i.e. bridges and large culverts, small span structures, retaining walls, sign/signal gantries and masts.
- Review and authorise inspection reports; identify and report on essential maintenance requirements for individual structures.
- Support programme of work on Substandard Structures including piers, parapets, post tensioned and half joints, scour.
- Develop collaborative working relationships with other cross Asset and Maintenance Teams which interface with structures, advising on technical aspects of structures & tunnel maintenance to balance routine/renewal needs for effective asset management.
- Lead on the development, update and review of bespoke management plans for strategic assets.
- Challenge engineering solutions to optimise whole life cost solutions.
- Lead on development of robust short, medium and long term asset intervention planning including budgeting to required deadlines (Asset Management Forward Plan preparation).
- Scheme Identification/Option Studies and other lifecycle advisory activities in relation to structures renewals
- Manage Team to assign Asset Leads for delegated Schemes within the structures portfolio supporting Project Managers to ensure asset objectives are followed for effective and efficient delivery.
- Compliance with legislation and contract service schedules in relation to structures & tunnel structures
- Attendance at callouts for the management of emergency incidents involving specified assets.
- Carry out other duties required by the Dartford/Structures Asset Leads, Managers commensurate with the role.

Qualifications
Qualifications/ skills/ experience:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structures, Tunnels or related subject.
- Working towards Professional Qualification, MICE, MIAM, MIStructE, or similar.
- Knowledge and experience of highway bridge asset management and an understanding of bridge inspection and maintenance activities
- Experience in risk identification and management (particularly in relation to civils infrastructure)
- Structures/Tunnel construction with maintenance/renewal experience would be advantageous.
- Skills in Office Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and others.
- Understanding of Asset Management Systems
- Understanding of working within the Strategic Road Network, with National Highways.
- Awareness of ISO55000, RWSC, DMRB, SHW and Performance Measurement of Highway Structures
- Experience in Windows server operating systems
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel
