Position: Full Time/Permanent Location: Daily Mail Headquarters, HSK, London, W8 5HY
About the Role
The Daily Mail is recruiting a Senior Audience Editor to join our audience team, partnering with wider editorial teams to inform editorial decision-making and audience strategy.
The right candidate is an analytical thinker with strong editorial judgement and excellent communication skills, who can translate complex data into actionable recommendations to optimise audience growth and engagement, both on and off-platform.
This role must be able to:
- Work effectively with experienced newsroom colleagues to implement audience engagement best practices
- Present insights to senior stakeholders with clarity and compelling storytelling
Main Responsibilities
- Analyse complex audience and content performance data to identify trends and opportunities for growth and engagement across all platforms
- Translate data into actionable insights for the newsroom, providing desks with advice on:
- Commissioning strategy
- Optimisation techniques
- Distribution tactics
- Analyse search, social, and audience trends to inform future strategy and avoid coverage gaps
- Identify repromotion opportunities and coach desks to optimise stories for:
- Specific audiences
- Targeted platforms
- User journeys
- Suggest and execute experiments to attract, engage, and retain target audiences
- Deliver contextualised insights to support major news event planning
- Build strong relationships with editors and stakeholders to embed audience engagement best practice
- Develop content, distribution, growth, and engagement strategies
- Present insights in high-stakes meetings with authority, clarity, and confidence
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and audience engagement best practices

Person Specification
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, data, or a related field
- Experience in:
- Audience development
- Editorial data analysis
- Journalism (ideally within a subscriptions business)
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, or similar tools for data querying (desirable)
Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical skills, with proven ability to:
- Interpret trends
- Visualise data
- Explain findings clearly
- Excellent editorial judgement with agility in fast-moving environments
- Deep knowledge of audience engagement best practices (particularly in subscription journalism)
- Exceptional written communication, with expertise in:
- Distilling complex insights into concise reports
- Confident public speaking, capable of engaging with senior editors and executives
- Ability to:
- Support and coach experienced journalists
- Build trust and credibility
- Creative problem-solving mindset with a willingness to experiment
