Senior Backend Engineer - remote
Our client, a venture-backed AI product company, is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to architect and scale the backend behind its consumer and B2B platforms. The business runs a heavily AWS-centric, serverless architecture and works in an AI-assisted engineering workflow, where AI tooling handles much of the code generation, and the engineer focuses on architecture, direction, review, and ownership.
This is a senior individual contributor role for someone with real engineering depth.
What you'll do:
- Own backend engineering and technical decisions across an AWS serverless platform
- Build and ship backend services using an AI-assisted workflow, directing AI tooling, then reviewing, correcting, and integrating what it produces
- Design and operate serverless APIs across Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, RDS (MySQL), DocumentDB/MongoDB, and S3
- Maintain infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS SAM) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions)
- Provide the engineering judgement AI can't, including debugging, performance, security, and data modelling

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we're looking for:

- Comfortable across relational and NoSQL data stores
- Fluent working in an AI-assisted or agentic coding workflow, with the judgement to review and trust-but-verify AI-generated code
- A genuine engineer by trade with a track record of building production systems at scale
