About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer with expertise in PHP to join a dynamic and entrepreneurial technology company based in Fareham. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects within a vibrant environment that emphasizes innovation, quality, and continuous improvement. Initially, the position will be office-based for the first three months, transitioning into a hybrid work model thereafter, providing flexibility and work-life balance. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will be instrumental in planning, developing, and maintaining the company’s core products, internal websites, and data migration processes. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including project managers and front-end developers, to deliver scalable, efficient, and secure systems. Your work will contribute directly to the company’s mission of delivering high-tech solutions in security, data backup, and cloud storage platforms, utilizing the latest web technologies and development methodologies.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in backend development with a focus on PHP and related technologies. Essential qualifications include:
- Proven experience in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
- Extensive knowledge of PHP (PHP5+), with a focus on modern PHP practices
- Solid understanding of relational databases, particularly MySQL
- Proficiency with version control systems, especially Git
- Experience working within Agile methodologies and TDD practices
Beneficial skills that will enhance your suitability for this role include familiarity with containerization and cloud services such as Kubernetes, AWS, Google Cloud, and Docker. Knowledge of load balancing, code review processes, and automation tools will also be advantageous.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Backend Engineer, your key responsibilities will include:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend systems using PHP within a Linux environment
- Implementing best practices in coding, security, and data management to ensure system integrity and performance
- Participating in system architecture discussions and contributing to the continuous improvement of development processes
- Writing and maintaining unit tests using PHPUnit and Selenium to uphold high-quality code standards
- Collaborating with front-end developers, project managers, and other stakeholders to deliver cohesive solutions
- Optimizing existing systems for performance, reliability, and scalability
- Assisting with data migration activities and supporting security and storage services
- Engaging in Greenfield development projects, leveraging modern development practices and tools
- Conducting code reviews and mentoring junior team members to foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment
