Job Opportunity: Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/x) - United Kingdom

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/x) based in the United Kingdom.

Join a remote-first engineering team building scalable technology solutions that power a fast-growing European marketplace. In this role, you'll design, develop, and maintain backend services that support millions of customer and seller interactions while solving complex technical challenges. You'll work within a cross-functional product squad, collaborating with engineers, product managers, designers, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions. With a strong focus on ownership, autonomy, and engineering excellence, you'll contribute to architecture decisions, best practices, and the continuous improvement of development processes. This is an opportunity for an experienced backend engineer to make a meaningful impact while working with modern technologies in a collaborative international environment.

Accountabilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and core platform functionalities that support marketplace operations.
  • Own the development and implementation of new features, services, and technical solutions from concept through production.
  • Develop reliable and maintainable systems using modern backend technologies, distributed architectures, and service-oriented design principles.
  • Manage production systems by monitoring performance, ensuring reliability, and proactively improving operational processes.
  • Integrate third-party systems and external APIs while maintaining security, scalability, and performance standards.
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices, technical standards, documentation processes, and high-quality development approaches.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions.
  • Contribute to engineering culture through mentoring junior colleagues, supporting onboarding, and sharing technical knowledge.
  • Participate in technical discussions, provide insights, and help drive continuous improvement across the engineering organization.
  • Occasionally contribute to frontend-related tasks when needed to support product delivery.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience designing and building scalable backend services in modern production environments.
  • Strong proficiency in Go and deep understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architectures.
  • Solid experience with SQL, relational database design, and backend data management.
  • Experience building reliable, high-performance systems and working with cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with frontend technologies and the ability to contribute to basic frontend tasks when required.
  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to work independently, navigate complex systems, and take initiative.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with curiosity and enthusiasm for experimenting with new technologies, frameworks, AI tools, and engineering practices.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in distributed, multicultural teams.
  • Humble, open-minded, and collaborative approach with a focus on knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Excellent English skills and ability to work within European time zones.
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, is preferred.
  • Experience with technologies such as gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, or similar modern infrastructure tools is an advantage.
