Senior Backend Engineer – GitLab Agent Tools
🚀 GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps. Empowering organizations to deliver secure, high-quality software faster.
Millions trust our technology—now help scale what AI agents can do in software development.
About This Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the GitLab Agent Tools team, you won’t just use AI tools—you’ll design and build systems that enable AI agents to interact with the entire software delivery lifecycle, far beyond code generation. This spans GitLab’s MCP server, future technologies, and API integrations that expose core platform capabilities to AI agents.
This is a high-visibility position at the intersection of GitLab's core backend and AI strategy. You’ll:
- Lead end-to-end complex feature development
- Establish architectural patterns for AI agent interactions with GitLab
- Collaborate closely with Agent Foundations, AI specialists, and adjacent engineering teams
Your Responsibilities
- Develop, deliver, and maintain secure, high-performance, well-tested features for Agent Tools in the GitLab backend monolith.
- Work alongside Product Management, UX designers, frontend engineers, and AI experts to translate requirements into iterative, high-impact solutions.
- Design, implement, and review REST and GraphQL APIs, ensuring:
- Scalability
- Reliability
- Clear backward-compatible contracts with frontend clients
- Enhance automated testing (RSpec, other frameworks) to boost quality, reliability, and feedback loops.
- Share best practices, patterns, and learnings with colleagues to advance responsible AI integration and evidence-based engineering.
- Engage in production troubleshooting through Tier 2 on-call rotations or RCA processes.
- Monitor the landscape to ensure GitLab’s MCP server remains best-in-class for AI agents.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
