Behavioural Science & Research Manager
The role requires a highly experienced and innovative Behavioural Science & Research Manager to work within our newly established behavioural science capability within the People, Governance & Communication function. These are critical roles reporting to the Head of Behavioural Science & Research responsible for applying the principles of behavioural science, research, and data analytics to optimise our talent and people strategy.
The initial primary focus of the roles is to work with the Head of Behavioural Science & Research to design, implement, and analyse assessments and interventions that enhance our people related outcomes, including talent acquisition, performance management and leadership development. There is scope to broaden impact to include support to business processes and client priorities over time. The Behavioural Science & Research Managers will be experts in behavioural science, with a proven track record of translating complex theory into practical, impactful business solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Expertise:
- Act as internal subject matter experts on behavioural science, providing strategic advice and insights to senior PG&C and business leaders on human behaviours and decision-making with the organisation.
Assessment & Measurement:
- Work with the Head of Behavioural Science & Research to identify or, design and develop, then validate behavioural and psychometric frameworks/assessments to accurately measure and predict high performance across key roles in line with HSBC ambition and strategy.
- Contribute to research to evaluate effectiveness and opportunities for improvement within people processes and practices (e.g. performance management, leadership development, succession planning) to shape strategy, improve utility and ensure alignment with HSBC priorities.

Behavioural Interventions:
- Work with the Head of Behavioural Science & Research to:
- Apply behavioural science and psychological models and principles (e.g., influence socio-cognition, motivation and biases) to design and optimise people-related processes and communications.
- Partner with internal stakeholders (e.g., Talent, P&R, L&D, People Insights & Analytics, Employee Listening) to design and run controlled experiments to test the impact of interventions on employee behaviour and improve organisational outcomes.
- Develop and implement solutions to address specific behavioural challenges, such as improving leader-employee feedback loops, increasing employee engagement & organisational commitment, psychological safety & trust and helping to enhance the adoption of ‘How We Lead’ as the framework is embedded throughout the organisation.
Research & Insights:
- Work with the Head of Behavioural Science & Research to:
- Establish a robust research agenda to answer critical questions about human behaviour at work. This includes conducting primary research, secondary literature reviews, and staying abreast of latest academic findings.
- Translate complex research findings into clear, actionable insights and compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
- Identify and collaborate with appropriate research partners both in and outside of HSBC. Be comfortable navigating these environments, including academia.
- Partner with People Strategy to publish and present research findings internally and, where appropriate, externally to enhance the Bank’s reputation as a thought leader.

Team Leadership & Development:
- Demonstrate the organisation’s leadership principles and foster a culture of curiosity, intellectual rigor, and continuous learning within the team.
- Contribute to the management of the team’s project pipeline, budget and stakeholder relationships.
- Provide peer coaching and mentoring within a small team of behavioural scientists and researchers, and wider colleagues as required.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
- A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field such as Behavioural Economics, Organisation Psychology, Industrial-Organisational Psychology, or a related discipline. Strong evidence of continued CPD post qualification.
Experience:
- 10+ years of professional experience in applying behavioural science or psychology in a complex, high stakes environment. Minimum 5 years experience in senior stakeholder management role, ideally within a large global organisation. Experience in financial services and dealing with Regulators is an advantage.
