Scientific Specialist for Haematology

About the Role
The Scientific Specialist for Haematology will join a team of senior scientists responsible for the operational delivery of core and specialist blood sciences services at a named site within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).
As a registered Biomedical Scientist, this role focuses on delivering and continuously enhancing a comprehensive blood sciences service tailored to the BCUHB clinical and patient needs. This specialist will contribute to strategic service delivery by following Clinical Pathways Guidance (CPG) directives and aligning to the guidance provided by the Blood Sciences Site Manager.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; however, both Welsh and English speakers are encouraged to apply.
Main Duties
Team Collaboration & Service Development
- Work with the Blood Sciences Site Manager, local Senior Scientific Team, and pan-BCU Senior Scientific Team to support:
- Service design and development
- Implementation of agreed departmental policies and departmental projects
- Regular management of scientific and support staff
Leadership & Service Quality
- Implement operational autonomy within professional guidelines in areas such as:
- Managing priorities, service enhancements, and training initiatives
- Personnel oversight in multi-skilled settings
- Collaborating with local and cross-site scientists while ensuring alignment with:
- UKAS standards
- HTA protocols
- BSQR accreditation
- Best-practice benchmarks

- Deliver against departmental objectives and specific projects under the supervision of the Blood Sciences Site Manager.

Essential Criteria
- BSc Biomedical Science
- Option: MSc Biomedical Science
- Specialist portfolio demonstrating expertise in Haematology
- Registration with the HCPC
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)

Essential Criteria
- Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong technical, quality, and safety knowledge
- Ability to organise workloads efficiently to meet deadlines and clinical priorities
- Clear communication skills (written/oral)
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in implementing new processes
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and coaching staff
- Participation in quality assurance assessments & accreditation visits
- Evidence of managing teams effectively in a service-led setting
- Advanced IT proficiency relevant to laboratory operations
Experience
Essential Criteria
- In-depth expertise in laboratory services relevant to a specialised blood sciences domain (e.g., haematology)
- Broad experience within the wider Blood Sciences Service
- Demonstrated involvement in service development initiatives
- Post-registration clinical experience in a laboratory context
- Knowledge and practical application of quality-led laboratory services
Desirable Criteria
- Experience managing a laboratory team or sections within a larger laboratory
- Welsh-speaking (desirable for enhanced patient care collaboration)
