Senior Biomedical Scientist - INTERNAL

Scientific Specialist for Haematology (BCUHB)

PLEASE NOTE:

About the Role

The Scientific Specialist for Haematology will join a team of senior scientists responsible for the operational delivery of core and specialist blood sciences services on a designated BCUHB site.

As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you will:

  • Deliver high-standard blood sciences services to meet clinical and patient needs under the strategic direction of the Clinical Pathology Group (CPG) and Blood Sciences Site Manager
  • Contribute to service design and development, implementing agreed policies and quality frameworks
  • Oversee a team of scientific and support staff, ensuring adherence to BCUHB, UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service), HTA (Human Tissue Authority), and BSQR (BSI Quality Reconnaissance) standards

Key Responsibilities

Service Development & Management

  • Collaborate with the Blood Sciences Site Manager, local Senior Scientific Team, and whole-BCUHB scientific panel to drive service improvements
  • Implement planned developments and interventions through effective team leadership and staff management
  • Work autonomously within professional guidelines to address service priorities and clinical demand

Team & Quality Leadership

  • Align with agreed objectives, delivering specific projects to enhance service quality under site managerial supervision
  • Foster collaboration with senior scientists (on-site and cross-site) and pathology governance teams to uphold compliance and best practice
  • Oversee training, quality assurance, and staff performance to maintain accreditation standards

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree: BSc or MSc in Biomedical Science
  • Specialist portfolio adhering to career framework requirements
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)

Desirable:

  • Formal management qualifications

Skills

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong knowledge of technology safety, laboratory quality systems, and performance standards
  • Ability to organise workload efficiently to meet clinical deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable:

  • Proven ability to implement process improvements
  • Experience in teaching/training, coaching, or mentoring
  • Participation in accreditation audits and quality assurances
  • Management experience within clinical laboratory settings
  • Advanced proficiency in laboratory IT systems

Experience

Essential:

  • Current, up-to-date expertise in haematology or blood sciences laboratories
  • Broad knowledge of wider blood sciences service functions and specifications
  • Participation in service uplift/development initiatives
  • Clinical post-registration experience in diagnostic/hematology-focused laboratories
  • Proven track record in quality-led clinical services

Desirable:

  • Experience as a section head, team lead, or full laboratory manager
