Senior Bridge Engineer – Bridges & Civils Team
Transportation Business, UK & Ireland
Overview
Shape a faster, smarter, safer future with AtkinsRéalis—where diversity, collaboration, and bold ideas transform infrastructure.
Innovation is at the heart of our culture, where passionate teams deliver gamechanging projects on various scales across the UK and Ireland. From iconic bridges like the A9 Dualling sections, A83 Rest and be Thankful, and Edinburgh North Bridge Refurbishment to high-impact programmes like the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy (Ireland)—and even nuclear-focused pure civil/structural works such as the Rolls Royce Small Modular Reactor programme—we design, reshape, and maintain the future of movement and sustainability.
Here, you’ll take pride in high-quality civil and structural design across all stages of projects—new builds, renewals, maintenance, and critical assessments. With your expertise, you’ll drive sustainable, innovative solutions that transcend engineering and elevate communities.
Your Role
You’ll lead a diverse range of challenging projects, tackling bridges, structures, and civil infrastructure with expertise and leadership. Key responsibilities include:
- Develop high-quality civil/structural designs for projects such as bridges, roads, and complex builds—ensuring strength, sustainability, and longevity.
- Collaborate with nationally and internationally on projects, steering a multi-disciplinary approach to solve critical challenges.
- Lead design delivery, producing comprehensive documentation including sketches, drawings, technical reports, and specifications.
- Lead small-to-medium project teams and provide technical support for junior staff.
- Manage scopes, budgets, and programmes across technical tiers, ensuring high-quality outputs while overseeing commercial relationships between project partners.
- Utilise your analytical and engineering judgement to evaluate solutions, making informed recommendations that balance cost, safety, and innovation.
- Lead bids and tenders, securing new business while nurturing deep client relationships.
- Inform non-transport works such as nuclear projects, high-profile infrastructure developments, and local authority contracts—across the UK, Ireland, and international markets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
