Senior Business Development Manager & Client Relationship Management, Investment Funds – London

About the Role

This strategic, leadership-focused role spans Maples and Calder’s legal practices and Maples Corporate Services—both of which have grown significantly and now require dynamic marketing evolution to support expansion. Reporting to the Head of Business Development & Client Relationship Management, this position will:

  • Contribute to the revision of the global funds practice vision and strategy.
  • Lead practical and tactical business development—strengthening the firm’s reputation, deepening client relationships, and growing revenue across the Investment Funds practice.
  • Work closely with the Global Funds Practice Group Leader (GPGL), Local Investment Funds Practice Group Leaders (LPGLs), and regional partners.

Key Responsibilities

Client Relationship Management & New Business

  • Lead structured client and market analyses to identify high-value targets, niche opportunities, and referral networks.
  • Develop actionable client pursuit plans for both existing and new clients based on CRM insights, market trends, and competitor intelligence.
  • Expand on CRM initiatives in collaboration with regional Funds BD teams, ensuring proactive follow-up.
  • Coordinate with the firm’s wider Group Business Development & Marketing to ensure a harmonised client engagement strategy.
  • Manage time-sensitive strategic and panel bids for priority clients.
  • Assist LPGLs to devise geographical-specific growth strategies and establish opportunities via data and competitor insights.
  • Provide strategic input on refugee pitches and Requests for Proposals (RFP) across the firm.
  • Ensure structured post-matter debriefs for pivotal propositions.

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with the GPGL and LPGLs to build a global funds practice pipeline and align with annual long-term strategies.
  • Support strategic budgeting and resource allocation for business development activities.
  • Lead global investment funds initiatives, including facilitating partner offsites and action plans.
  • Team up with the Head of Business Development & Client Relationship Management to execute high-value revenue and brand growth initiatives.
  • Develop and oversee at least one annual funds-specific client-facing campaign, coordinating with the marketing team.

Practice Management & Execution

  • Serve as the primary contact for the GPGL, aiding coordination in global and external concerns.
  • Challenge partners professionally, ensuring their focus aligns with strategic priorities.
  • Monitor budget adherence and advocate for justifiable unplanned expenditure.
  • Foster consistent cross-regional execution of the funds BD methodology.
  • Remain proactive in identifying market trends and advising relevant teams accordingly.
  • Represent funds knowledge expertise to the BD and Marketing teams, ensuring a comprehensive, full-service approach for clients.

Operational Excellence

  • Elevate team performance through ongoing training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing with junior team members.
  • Present to firm-wide initiatives, supporting complex projects beyond core fund responsibilities.
  • Engage with the broader Maples Group Business Development & Marketing community to enhance cross-team coordination.

Key Relationships to Build & Maintain

  • Regular collaboration with the Head of Business Development & Client Relationship Management and regional funds BD teams.
  • Daily interaction with the firm’s fee earners to drive practice-wide growth objectives.
  • Networking with prominent industry associations.
  • Continuous communication with marketing and BD colleagues to build cross-selling opportunities.
  • Cross-firm coordination with operational and support teams to achieve unified strategic goals.

Experience & Qualifications

We are searching for a strategic, commercially-focused professional with:

  • 10+ years’ experience developing and successfully implementing BD strategies within high-performance organisations.
  • Team management experience with a record of leading diverse groups to operational and behavioural excellence.
  • Industry expertise in private funds, investment management, or regulated financial services essential.
  • Exceptional client relationship development and networking skills.
  • Cross-cultural experience is a critical bonus.
  • Sharp commercial mindset—recognising opportunities and navigating risks in dynamic environments.
  • Proficiency in marketing and BD strategy, alongside project management.
  • A track record of running strategic pitch processes.
  • Ability to motivate, advise, and coach others in growing both clients and revenue streams.
  • Well-developed networking skills, fostering high-impact relationships.
