Who are we?
Southern Water is building a modern, trusted data platform to support better decision-making, regulatory performance and customer outcomes. Our Business Intelligence teams play a critical role in turning complex data into clear, actionable insight across the organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a newly formed BI Engineering team and help shape how business intelligence is delivered, governed and improved across Southern Water.
The role
As a Senior BI Engineer, you will help lead the day-to-day delivery of BI solutions within a domain-aligned agile squad. This role would suit an experienced BI Developer or BI Engineer who is ready to take the next step into technical coordination, mentoring and delivery leadership.
You do not need to have done every aspect of the role before, but you will need strong Power BI and semantic modelling experience, good SQL skills, strong communication, and the confidence to support other BI developers.
You will act as a key link between business stakeholders, Product Owners, Data Modellers, Data Engineers and Platform teams — helping translate business needs into practical, scalable and well-governed BI solutions.
The role includes hands-on BI development, technical guidance, squad-level coordination and mentoring. It is ideal for someone who enjoys building high-quality BI solutions, but also wants to help shape standards, improve ways of working and support the team to deliver effectively.
What you’ll be doing
- Designing, building and maintaining Power BI reports, datasets and semantic models
- Helping translate business requirements into clear, practical BI solutions
- Supporting day-to-day BI engineering delivery within a domain-aligned squad
- Coordinating work across BI Engineers, Data Modellers and Data Engineers
- Supporting prioritisation, backlog refinement and delivery planning
- Acting as a bridge between business stakeholders and technical delivery teams
- Applying good practice in Power BI performance, usability, security and access control
- Documenting report logic, data sources, measures, definitions and model design
- Supporting the development of certified metrics and a single version of the truth
- Reviewing and improving existing BI assets, models and reporting processes
- Using SQL and modern data platform tools to validate data and support report development
- Supporting data quality, governance and compliance requirements within BI solutions
- Mentoring and guiding BI Engineers, including sharing knowledge and reviewing work
- Helping establish reusable BI standards, patterns and delivery processes
- Contributing to agile ceremonies and continuous improvement across the BI community

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
