The Role
The Information & Analytics (I&A) function sits at the heart of our data operations. With a centralised Google BigQuery warehouse, we serve as the single source of truth for business data. This role ensures our data pipelines are robust, our models optimised, and our analytics infrastructure scalable and efficient.
Key Focus Areas
- Data Pipeline Development & Maintenance: Build and maintain reliable ETL/ELT pipelines connecting business systems to BigQuery.
- Data Modelling & Transformation: Design efficient data models and transformations to prepare analysis-ready datasets.
- Change & System Integration: Advise on data impact assessments for business system modifications, integrations, and procurements.
- Data Governance & Quality: Implement and enforce best practices for data security, quality, and compliance.
Note: This role is available only to candidates residing in the UK due to operational requirements.
What You’ll Be Doing
As Data Engineer at Digital Science, you’ll:
- Collaborate cross-functionally to identify, collect, and validate data sources; align analytics requirements with business needs.
- Design and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines (including Fivetran, custom cloud pipelines, and bespoke API integrations).
- Develop and maintain data-modelling templates using Dataform or dbt, version control and CI/CD-optimised pipelines.
- Enforce data governance best practices, including security protocols, quality checks, and monitoring systems.
- Partner with teams to assess and recommend data architectures for system procurements, upgrades, or migrations.
- Innovate by leveraging industry trends (e.g., GCP services, AI/ML) to enhance capabilities.

What You’ll Bring
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience as a Data Engineer (or similar) within a cloud-first environment (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Expertise in SQL, with experience designing modular transformations, optimising queries, and writing complex Business Intelligence (BI) queries.
- Hands-on experience with pipeline-as-code frameworks like dbt, Dataform or equivalent (e.g., Gregor, Data distillery).
- Understanding of DevOps practices (Git, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code).
- Direct experience with Google BigQuery, including:
- Performance optimisation (partitioning, clustering).
- Handling large-scale datasets and cost management.
- Familiarity with BI tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, Power BI).
- Experience building ELT pipelines, including (but not limited to) Fivetran, Airbyte, or Stitch.
- Strong grasp of data modelling principles (dimensional modelling, star schemas) and adherence to best practices in data quality, lineage, and tracing.
- Ability to design fully documented, reliable, and maintainable data solutions requiring attention to testing, scalability, and operational value.
Bonus Points
- Working knowledge of other Google Cloud services (Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Cloud Run).
- Incorporation of data quality tools, automated testing, or alerting systems.
- Familiarity with AI/ML, especially:
- Google Vertex AI or BigQuery ML applications.
- Applicant mixture and diversity testing.
