Senior Buyer
About The Role

Join our Major Projects team as a Senior Buyer at Net Zero Teesside (NZT) based on our site in Redcar and Cleveland, and you’ll deliver complex work that matters to our business and the world around you.
You’ll be accountable for the management of the end-to-end procurement activities for the sourcing of subcontracts, materials, plant, and equipment for the Lincoln contract, and may also support other contracts in the Business Unit as required.
Activities will include:
- Compiling procurement strategies
- Preparation of RFQ’s / ITT’s
- Management and evaluation of returns
- Making sourcing recommendations to award contracts
- Overseeing specific supply chains to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement in alignment with Contract and Business Unit key objectives
What You’ll Be Doing
- Preparation of invitations to tenders and requests for quotations for subcontracts, materials, and service requirements
- Conducting due diligence and commercial checks for supply partners
- Completing a full evaluation of tender responses and compiling award recommendations for approval
- Ensuring contract requirements are met and negotiating high-quality, value-for-money contracts to meet efficiencies and saving targets
- Establishing long-term relationships with the supply chain, focusing on:
- Value for money
- Service and product quality
- Continuous improvement to drive competitive advantage for Balfour Beatty
- Collaborating with the contract team to resolve supply issues as needed
- Monitoring supply chain performance and generating regular reports, including performance development plans where necessary
- Scouting the supply market to identify potential new suppliers and products, including leading supplier meetings to discuss their offerings
- Staying informed about market developments, demand trends, and risks
- Working cross-functionally with all departments to integrate HSEQ+S principles and commercial objectives
- Ensuring strict compliance with processes and maintaining quality standards
- Providing procurement support for work winning opportunities in the Business Unit
- Delivering monthly dashboards and reports on procurement and subcontractor performance to the Contract Director
- Prioritising the creation of an agile, value-adding service through:
- Deep customer requirement understanding
- Technical competence
- Functional knowledge
- Process efficiency
- Building performance-led, long-term supplier relationships with a focus on:
- Value for money
- Service and product quality
- Social value
- Continuous improvement

Additionally, you will:

Who We’re Looking For
The following experience/qualifications are required:
- Previous senior-level experience in Procurement and Supply Chain Management within a construction, or related sector
- An organised approach to procurement compliance, commercial awareness, and a measured approach to decision-making to ensure best-value procurement
- The ability to adopt a prudent yet disciplined approach to process compliance
- Experience with Oracle R12 will be viewed favourably
- Preference for candidates with a Master’s Certificate in Purchase and Supply (MCIPS) or equivalent qualification
Essential skills and experience include:
- Strong negotiation skills and a track record of running tenders and negotiating high-value deals with a history of delivering value
- Experience handling Category Management, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM), and Supplier Performance Management (SPM)
