Senior Buyer – General Merchandise Retail Buying

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Buyer to join our General Merchandise Retail Buying team based in Walsall on a 12-month fixed-term contract, offering hybrid working flexibility.

As a Senior Buyer, you'll take ownership of key categories in Home and Everyday Home, driving commercial performance, implementing trading strategies, and managing budgets and resources. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maximising sales, profitability, and sustainable growth through category management and people leadership.
  • Developing and leading teams to source the right products and design ranges that excite customers while maintaining quality and value.
  • Gaining customer and brand insights to grow categories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the achievement of Commercial strategy and KPIs through effective leadership.
  • Drive revenue, margin, and gross profit across commercial divisions and brands.
  • Lead product range reviews, ensuring category performance optimization.
  • Set and meet KPIs for sales, margins, and operational metrics.
  • Develop and execute company strategic plans tailored to each category.
  • Implement initiatives to boost sales, reduce costs, and improve product delivery.
  • Define and execute a growth strategy based on competitive insights and market trends.
  • Identify and create new product range opportunities, including private label categories, and enhance existing own-brand performance.
  • Oversee business planning, sales forecasting, and space budgeting.
  • Champion process improvement to enhance team efficiency and impact.
  • Foster a positive, high-performance culture while addressing performance constructively.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to the Director of Trade and Commercial Director.
  • Assess and improve reporting systems for informed decision-making.

About You

We are seeking someone with:

  • Proven experience as a Senior Buyer in FMCG Retail Buying.
  • Deep sector knowledge, including market dynamics, competitors, and consumer behaviour.
  • Strong contract negotiation and supplier relationship-building skills.
  • A track record of driving cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Track record of cost-effective sourcing that enhances profitability.
  • Ability to lead high-performing teams and manage underperformance effectively.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating with suppliers to achieve strategic goals.
