Midwifery Leadership Opportunity

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an inspirational and motivated midwife to join our maternity leadership team within NHS Highland.

This is a permanent part-time post (23 hours) with a clear focus on intrapartum care, including participation in day, night, and weekend rotation. The successful candidate will be flexible and able to work across the maternity unit to support safe, effective service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be a Registered Midwife on the NMC Register, educated to degree level or equivalent, with significant clinical experience in intrapartum care. They will play a key role in ensuring the provision of safe, effective, and person-centred care, delivered within a trauma-informed framework and aligned with NHS Highland policies, national standards, and NMC requirements.

As a member of the leadership team, the post holder will:

  • Provide visible, compassionate, and professional leadership within the intrapartum environment
  • Support the delivery and ongoing development of intrapartum services, ensuring care is responsive to the needs of women and families
  • Lead on quality improvement, governance, and assurance processes, promoting a culture of continuous service development
  • Contribute to the safe and effective management of resources, including workforce, capacity, and patient flow
  • Use advanced clinical expertise to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care, supporting staff in complex clinical decision-making

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate

  • Advanced clinical expertise in intrapartum care, including risk assessment and escalation
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire, support and develop staff
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering effective multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Ability to lead service development and quality improvement initiatives, with a focus on safety and patient experience
  • Sound understanding of clinical governance frameworks, including audit, risk management, and assurance processes
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills in a dynamic and often high-pressure environment
  • Ability to manage patient flow and operational pressures, ensuring safe staffing and optimal use of resources
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, person-centred care and equity of access to services
  • Resilience and adaptability, with the ability to work flexibly across the service

The post holder will be expected to communicate effectively and provide professional leadership by working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to promote excellence in care, service improvement, and assurance.
