Job Description

Position Summary

At LGC, we believe in pushing the boundaries of what's possible. As a Senior Chemist II, you will play a pivotal role in our research team, applying both practical and theoretical synthetic organic chemistry skills. This position is uniquely positioned to drive innovations in our procedures, aiming to improve yields, increase reproducibility, scale operations, and reduce manufacturing costs. Key responsibilities

  • Complete scheduled work on time, within budget, and within specification
  • Achieve right first-time results to reduce rework
  • Ensure timely delivery in full for all projects
  • Understand underlying chemical and physical principles before starting assigned work
  • Effectively monitor all reactions to prevent incomplete work-ups
  • Report any batch failures or unexpected results immediately to the Chemistry Manager
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for improving chemical procedures
  • Efficiently complete custom synthesis/NPI projects, including crafting synthetic routes, improving existing routes, and troubleshooting
  • Contribute to writing and revising detailed procedures
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of all work
  • Plan and manage continuous improvement (CI) projects
  • Support the development of new products within the company
  • Accurately record, interpret, and report all generated data
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant current literature and technical developments
  • Review, optimise, and define manufacturing instructions for continuous improvement
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations

  • Right first-time (RFT)
  • Delivery to plan (DTP)
  • Efficiency (number of batches completed per chemist per week)

Qualifications

Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Chemistry

  • Minimum of 10 years industrial experience or relevant postdoc

  • Proven project management experience

  • Experience working in a quality-led laboratory environment

  • Batch manufacture experience from <10 g to at least 1 kg

  • Demonstrated success in product development projects

  • Experience with contract/custom synthesis projects

  • Proven experience in process improvement and scale-up projects

  • Experience in projects involving new product development

  • Desirable: Knowledge of oligonucleotide synthesis

  • Knowledge and experience in:

    • Synthetic organic synthesis
    • Setting up and working up reactions
    • Purification of materials (column chromatography, crystallisation, precipitation, distillation)
    • Analysis by TLC, HPLC, LCMS, NMR
    • Process improvement projects
