About Us

The Vale of Glamorgan is assisting communities through its Flying Start Programme, a Welsh Government-funded initiative targeting families with children aged 0–3 to promote holistic early development, including:

  • Language, cognitive and emotional skill development
  • Early identification of high needs
  • Health guidance and parenting support programmes
  • Free part-time childcare

About the Role

Job Title: Senior Childcare Worker (Flying Start Programme) Location: Barry, Flying Start settings (part-time across 4 locations) Hours: 35 hrs per week Term Time: 39 weeks annually Contract Type: Temporary until 31 March 2028 Pay Grade: Grade 5, SCP 8-12, £26,824–£28,598 p.a. (pro rata = £13.90–£14.82/hr)

Key Responsibilities: A dynamic role fostering high-quality childcare for 0–4-year-olds. You will:

  • Design and lead nurturing learning experiences for young children (focus on age-appropriate play, social growth, and developmental milestones).
  • Work flexibly to cover all childcare settings when needed.
  • Champion Caring about Learning and Development (CCLD)—opportunities provided for NVQ Level 5 extension (management leadership qualifications).
  • Collaborate with parenting programmes, health teams, and wider Flying Start elements to support holistic family outcomes.
  • Reflect Vale of Glamorgan Council values and priorities in daily practice.

This role is ideal for professionals passionate about childcare seeking hands-on, early-years experience while contributing to community-wide improvement.


About You

Required:

  • NVQ 4/QCF Level 5 qualification in Children’s Care, Learning and Development (CCLD)—essential foundation.
  • Senior/advanced practitioner status (e.g., experience in team leadership or managing children’s caregivers).
  • Dedicated 2+ years working with babies/toddlers in a regulated childcare environment—critical.
  • Depth of knowledge Current Institute for Excellence in Early Years (CIW) regulations.
  • Ability to plan, organise, and implement play-based activities, emphasising early learning outcomes.
