Senior Children’s Residential Care Worker

Department: Residential Location: The Mallards – Old Weston (Weston-super-Mare, Somerset) Compensation: £38,554 per year (or £15.45–£19.00 per hour, dependent on experience, qualifications, and sleeps)


About the Role

Do you want to make a life-changing difference to the children in your care? Join Esland as a Senior Children’s Residential Care Worker in one of our dedicated therapeutic residential homes for children with complex needs.

We’re looking for nurturing, compassionate, and resilient professionals who care deeply about supporting vulnerable young people through challenging times. In this role, you’ll provide tremendous care, emotional support, and a structured environment that enables children to thrive.


Key Responsibilities

Care & Pastoral Support

  • Provide high-quality, trauma-informed residential care in a three-bedroom home (The Mallards) designed for crisis intervention.
  • Offer tailored, one-to-one emotional and therapeutic support to children with mental health, behavioural, or developmental needs.
  • Ensure safety, dignity, and respect for all children in the home, working within strict safeguarding policies.
  • Help children develop life skills, personal resilience, and positive habits through structured routines, autonomy, and positive reinforcement.

Behaviouoral & Therapeutic Engagement

  • Work closely with psychologists, social workers, and therapists to understand children’s needs and co-deliver interventions.
  • Plan and deliver recreational and enrichment activities (e.g., cinema nights, sports, swimming, arts and crafts) aligned with children’s interests and development.
  • Foster healthy, non-coercive approaches to behaviour management, ensuring a calm and constructive environment.

Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Full UK driving licence (necessary for safeguarding duties and community outings).
  • Level 3 qualification in Child Care & Education (e.g., NVQ Level 3, BA in Childhood Studies).
  • At least 12 months experience working in a residential care setting with children.
  • Ability to commit to 24/7 shifts (including sleep nights), Monday to Sunday.
  • Must be over 18 (due to health & safety requirements for working with children).
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Skills

  • First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain one.
  • Experience implementing trauma-informed care.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in crisis situations.
  • Experience with medication administration records.
