About us

The British Energy Security Strategy set out the Government’s ambition to connect up to 50GW of offshore generation to the electricity network by 2030. Delivering this ambition requires significant reinforcement of the onshore electricity transmission network and National Grid Strategic Infrastructure is leading the way.

At National Grid, we connect homes and businesses to power, ensuring supply and demand are balanced every second of every day. From schools and hospitals to sporting arenas, we keep the lights on for millions of people across the UK.

We are hiring for a Senior Civil Engineer who will oversee the scoping, development, technical compliance and engineering quality for all aspects of Civil Engineering associated with our growing offshore portfolio. This role will require travel to projects sites across England and Scotland. We are committed to supporting flexible working arrangements and welcome conversations about how we can make this role work for you.

Job Purpose

The principal value created by this role is to ensure that National Grid adopts a consistent approach to civil engineering across all projects, ensuring that best practice is shared and risks and opportunities are managed.

The successful candidate, in addition to supporting projects deploying today’s technology, will also be required to work closely with Suppliers, Industry counterparts and Academia to influence development of external policy and emerging technologies, gaining a thorough knowledge of solution readiness and risk.

This individual will also establish consistent ways of working with Asset Operations, JV partners and OEM’s to create and embed world class engineering practices across our growing portfolio of HVDC assets.

What You'll Do

  • Act as a leading consultant to the strategic management of civil activities supporting our transmission assets
  • Assist projects in understanding technical and programme risk associated with civil engineering activities, and realise opportunities to improve ability to gain consent, and to maximise sustainability.
  • Ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of civil solutions – be they physical assets, digital assets and their associated construction and maintenance methodologies.
  • Inspire and influence both internal and external stakeholders to realise excellent outcomes.
  • Create and support the implementation of an engineering capability growth plan.
  • Account for business risk: time/cost/quality/safety and provide assurance that civil engineering activities are within business tolerance.
  • Identify and drive innovation in line with the strategic direction.
  • Lead and shape National Grid’s relationships with key external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, professional bodies, suppliers, international engineering institutions, academic institutions).
  • Establish and maintain a network of thought leaders to establish market trends and facilitate convergence of ideas as appropriate.
  • Provide senior executive advice and briefing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
