Senior Civil Engineer – Mott MacDonald Bentley

Mott MacDonald Bentley is a fully integrated design and build business combining the design expertise of Mott MacDonald with the contracting experience of JN Bentley. You will work on major water and wastewater schemes throughout all phases of the project—from feasibility through to construction.

Working within this unit, you will collaborate on multi-disciplinary projects for a diverse portfolio of clients—including the Environment Agency, Associated British Ports (ABP), Rolls Royce, Canal and River Trust, the Mining Remediation Authority, National Grid, Cadent Gas, P&G, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), as well as local authorities. Projects range from:
- Flood alleviation
- Water treatment
- Infrastructure construction
- Industrial building development
- Gas network upgrades
As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in projects that significantly impact our environment and communities. Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) delivers feasibility, design, construction, and commissioning services to keep communities protected and industry operational. You’ll contribute to solutions that enhance infrastructure effectiveness and sustainability.
Role Overview
The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for:
- Design leadership and compliance: Providing technical expertise and ensuring design outputs meet current legislation and industry standards, while delivering fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Collaborative problem-solving: Working closely with commercial, operational, and construction teams to develop efficient, practical, and safe project solutions throughout all stages—from design to delivery post-construction.
- Client relationship management: Actively engaging with clients, adopting a one-team approach to support their objectives and maintain strong working relationships.
- Interdisciplinary coordination: Managing interface planning between civil design and other engineering disciplines, and producing comprehensive technical documentation.
- Quality assurance: Acting as a technical checker and reviewer of project documents, including cross-team validation.
- Process innovation: Identifying opportunities to improve project delivery, including:
- Development and implementation of standard designs
- Promotion of sustainable solutions
- Activation of digital tools
- Site verification: Conducting on-site reviews to evaluate buildability and integration within existing systems.
- Team development: Supporting the growth of the civil engineering team by:
- Coaching and mentoring engineers in skill enhancement
- Ensuring projects benefit from the right resource allocation

Job Requirements
To excel in this role, you’ll need:
- A degree in Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Chartership (CEng) through a relevant engineering institution.
- Proven track record of delivering high-quality technical outputs, aligned with design, quality, and safety standards.
- A valid driving licence and willingness to travel for projects across operational regions.
