Job Description
Title: Senior Civil Engineer, Water Business
Location: Hybrid work from Southern UK offices (St Albans, Croydon, London Aldgate, Basingstoke)
Reports to: Line manager within the Water Engineering team of AECOM’s Southeast regions
About the Role
This exciting opportunity bridges ambition and impact. As a Senior Civil Engineer in AECOM’s thriving Water Engineering team, you’ll deliver a diverse portfolio of water infrastructure projects — from strategic pipelines and Treatment Works upgrades to utility design and flood risk management — for major UK water companies (e.g., Thames Water, Affinity Water, Southern Water) and global clients.
Key highlights:
- Collaborate with civil, mechanical, electrical, and process engineers, as well as hydraulic modellers and environmental scientists.
- Work on high-impact projects like the London Power Tunnels, HS2 utilities, water mains rehabilitation, and Southern Water STW upgrades.
- Transition between initiation, delivery, and innovation as part of AECOM’s multi-year infrastructure frameworks.
- Shape the future of water systems with a global team of 670+ experts across UK & Ireland.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate | Partner with multidisciplinary teams to scope, price proposals, and manage project delivery across UK and international projects.
- Deliver | Produce:
- Feasibility studies
- Outline & detailed designs
- Technical specifications & reports
- Leadership | Mentor junior staff, conduct performance evaluations, and manage project discipline teams.
- Quality Compliance | Ensure designs adhere to standards and regulations, provide technical expertise for interdisciplinary analyses.
- Client Engagement | Engage with stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives and sustainability goals.

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Civil Engineering degree or equivalent qualification, or proven experience achieving equivalent technical qualifications.
- >3 years’ post-qualification experience in the water sector at Senior level with demonstrated track record.
- Chartered / Incorporated status with an institution (e.g., ICE, CIWEM), or progress towards Chartered Engineer status.
- Specialised experience in:
- Engineering assessments, options appraisals, economic evaluations.
- Detailed/outline designs (preferably wastewater treatment, flood risk management, or drainage schemes).
