About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Clinical Coder to join the Health Information Services team at Calvary Mater Newcastle.
The Senior Clinical Coder is responsible for reviewing, interpreting and accurately coding inpatient episodes of care using ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australia Coding Standards. The role contributes to the integrity of clinical data, accurate Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) assignment, Activity Based Funding (ABF), performance reporting and compliance with national coding standards.
Working independently within a supportive and collaborative team environment, the successful applicant will provide advanced coding expertise across a broad clinical casemix and contribute to coding quality improvement initiatives, clinical documentation improvement activities, education programs and auditing processes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Accurately assign ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes in accordance with Australian Coding Standards relevant classification systems.
- Ensure coded data is complete, accurate and timely to support data integrity, DRG assignment, Activity Based Funding outcomes and organisational reporting.
- Independently manage coding workloads and prioritise to meet coding throughput, productivity and quality benchmarks.
- Participate in coding audits, quality assurance activities and data quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality, privacy and information security in accordance with legislation, standards and organisation policies.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Completion of HIMAA Clinical Coding Certification, Diploma of Clinical Coding and/or Bachelor of Health Information Management.
- Minimum 5 years’ clinical coding experience within a tertiary or acute hospital setting.
- Demonstrated high-level coding accuracy and productivity across a broad range of clinical specialities.
- Comprehensive and current knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, Australian Coding Standards, DRGs and Activity Based Funding principles.
- Demonstrated ability to independently code complex episodes of care using sound professional judgement.
- Excellent organisation, analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve coding throughput and quality targets while working independently and collaboratively.
