Job Opportunity: Locum Specialist Registrar in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a full-time Locum Specialist Registrar in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma.
Successful Candidate Requirements
- Duration: 12-month fixed-term contract from August 2026 to August 2027
- Responsibilities: Participate in the General Surgery 1:13 emergency on-call rota at Specialist Registrar level

- Location: Based at University Hospital Aintree
- Department: Emergency General Surgery Unit (EGSU)/Trauma Department
Trust Overview
- Population Served: Approximately one-third of a million from North Liverpool, Sefton Borough, and Kirkby
- Facilities: All in-patient and out-patient services are now provided on the Aintree site, following the completion of the new-build £30 million ‘State of the Art Elective Care Centre and the transfer of services from the Trust’s Walton Hospital site.
- Status: Foundation Trust since 2006, committed to developing services with patient involvement
Recent Developments
- Merger: Following the merger with the Royal Liverpool Hospital NHS Trust in October 2019, a program of service reconfiguration is ongoing.
- Scope of Work: If appointed, working across Trust sites may be required to meet service needs.

Emergency General Surgery Unit (EGSU)
- Overview: One of the first dedicated Emergency General surgical Units in the country, managing the bulk of non-elective surgical referrals and admissions.
- Staffing: Nine dedicated Emergency consultant surgeons providing high-level support to trainees.
- Activities:
- Active teaching and clinical research program
- Expanding program of elective activity with exposure to routine and complex General surgical procedures

- Ward 15: Acute surgery / Vascular surgery
- Ward 2: Major Trauma Ward
- Other Sites:

- Broadgreen Hospital: Regular lists for day case / elective surgery
- Main Aintree University Hospital: Emergency and major elective surgery
