Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our highly skilled perfusion team in one of England’s busiest and most specialised cardiac and congenital cardiac surgery departments.
This role is based at a regional centre of excellence, offering exposure to complex, specialist cases.

About The Role
Main Duties & Responsibilities
As a Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientist, you will:
- Work within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality, safe care
- Provide adult cardiopulmonary bypass techniques, including:
- Cell salvage and blood conservation strategies
- Point-of-care blood analysis
- Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA)
- ECMO support
- Desirable but not essential:
- Paediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) experience (Development opportunities available in these areas)
- Accreditation & registration required:
- Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland
- College of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland

Key Performance Area
- The team performs 1,800 adult and 400 paediatric procedures annually across five cardiac theatres.
Additional Responsibilities
- Full participation in on-call rota is essential
- You will handle administrative duties and may be delegated additional responsibilities based on experience

Professional Background
- Essential experience:
- Proven expertise in adult cardiopulmonary bypass procedures
- Specialist techniques (e.g., left heart bypass, antegrade/retrograde cerebral perfusion, vacuum-assisted venous drainage, VADs, blood conservation)
- Preferred experience (desirable):
- Paediatric ECMO training completed
- Neonatal/GUCH perfusion

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- MSc in Clinical Perfusion Science or equivalent experience
- Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists Accreditation
- Full registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists
- Full knowledge of adult cardiopulmonary bypass & associated techniques
- Competence in specialist perfusion procedures, e.g.,:
- Left heart bypass
- Cerebral perfusion (antegrade/retrograde)
- Vacuum-assisted venous drainage
- Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs)
- Blood conservation techniques
Desirable
- Experience in neonatal, paediatric, and/or GUCH perfusion
- Completed paediatric ECMO training course
