The Infectious Diseases Research Unit (IDRU)

The Infectious Diseases Research Unit (IDRU) is looking for a band 7 Senior Research Nurse to oversee the delivery of their portfolio of commercial and academic research studies, and manage the research team. As part of this, they will also coordinate their own small portfolio of studies.

The job provides an opportunity for an enthusiastic, hardworking and highly motivated individual to support the expansion of the research portfolio, and to further develop the clinical research delivery team.

About the Role

The role is patient facing, supporting the more junior members of the team recruiting research participants from I.D. wards, ICU, A&E and other acute clinical specialties. You will be required to take consent and samples from patients with known pathogens such as M-Pox, SARS, COVID and influenza as well as any newly emerging pathogens.

The Senior Nurse will collaborate with PIs and the wider multi-disciplinary team, as well as other research teams in the Trust, and external teams, e.g. the NIHR Strategic Workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Direct line management of the Infectious Diseases Research Team, including supporting training and development of these nurses to ensure they deliver their studies effectively, and assisting with recruitment/study activities on a regular basis.
  • Tracking recruitment and retention data, and reporting on this to PIs, the Lead Research Nurse, and Divisional Research Manager.
  • Managing own caseload of research studies (this is minimal, in view of other responsibilities.
  • Supporting with teaching/development opportunities - for student nurses, medical students, visiting researchers, research interns and other junior members of the team.
  • Working with the Lead Nurse for HIV/Sexual Health and ID Research to increase the team's portfolio of studies, including actively seeking new studies to be involved in, completing EOIs and developing strong networks in infectious diseases academia to promote our reputation as a desirable research team to work with.
  • Working with the wider research delivery workforce to support workforce development and collaborative work between teams.

Requirements

  • Prior knowledge of research delivery is essential, and experience working in infectious diseases, or high-acuity inpatient care is desirable.

Location

The role is based at St Mary's Hospital, with regular cross-cover to Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospital sites. It is a full time role (37.5 hours/week, Mon-Fri), and a 12 month fixed-term contract.
