Job Title: Senior Clinical Trial Manager

Background & Role Overview

This permanent but externally-funded post offers an unrivalled opportunity to drive paediatric research within the Vaccinology Group, based at the Centre for Neonatal and Paediatric Infection (CNPI).

The CNPI specialises in:

  • Vaccine research (clinical trials and epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases)
  • Cohort studies and cohort-based research in children
  • Perinatal infections
  • Optimisation of antimicrobial therapies in paediatric medicine

The Senior Clinical Trial Manager will act as lead project coordinator, working closely with Prof Kirsty Le Doare and the Vaccinology team, overseeing financial management, staff supervision, and strategic planning.

Key focus areas:

  • Independence – Work autonomously with minimum oversight.
  • Problem-solving – Anticipate and resolve bottlenecks while ensuring agreed milestone goals are met.
  • Innovation – Demonstrate creative problem-solving to implement tailored solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Coordination

  • Manage and coordinate clinical trial projects, from conception through to ethical applications, trial conduct, completion, and data analysis.
  • Liaise with Principal Investigators (PI) and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment between administrative, clinical, and financial objectives.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and support a diverse clinical trial team, fostering a collaborative and goal-oriented environment.
  • Provide mentorship to junior researchers in trial management best practices.

Financial & Administrative Expertise

  • Oversee budget planning, financial reporting, and resource allocation (in consultation with the PI and finance teams).
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., NHS and experimental interventions), ethical guidelines, and study protocols.

Person Specification

Experience & Qualifications

  • Extensive clinical trial experience in an academic environment, with demonstrated ability in:
    • From project initiation (trial design) through to subsequent data management.
    • Gaining ethical approvals and regulatory endorsement.
    • Coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and complex interdisciplinary projects.
  • Proven track record in study management, reporting, and conflict resolution within high-pressure research timelines.
  • Experience in perinatal or paediatric research is advantageous but not essential for candidates with comparable clinical trial experience.

Skills & Attitude

  • Strategic thinker: Ability to devise and execute creative, adaptive solutions for trial-related challenges.
  • Analytical rigidity & professionalism: Ensure data integrity and compliance across all study phases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Collaborate effectively with clinicians, researchers, sponsors, and regulatory bodies.

  • Contract Type: Permanent post (funded for 12 months via external grant).
