Senior Clinical Tutor (General Practice) – Fixed Term

Background
In the UK, General Practices face growing pressure to improve patient access, reducing capacity to accommodate undergraduate medical students. To address this, Birmingham Medical School is redesigning General Practice (GP) teaching to ensure students receive sufficient exposure without needing space/time at clinical sites.
This role is a Senior Clinical Tutor (SCT), reporting to the Associate Clinical Professors in the GP team. Responsibilities include:
- Teaching and supervising MBChB Medical Students
- Developing teaching delivery models that occur primarily on University campus (not in practices)
- Utilising online and in-person learning materials to engage students in GP-relevant subjects
Role Summary
The core focus is to deliver small-group teaching sessions for General Practice Clinical Teaching Days based at the University of Birmingham campus. The Primary Responsibilities include:
- Year 3 Course Delivery (widespread GP-relevant clinical subjects) within the MBChB curriculum.
- Feedback & Evaluation – Review, analyse, and action student feedback.
- Teaching beyond a sole focus on for GPs:
- Participate in OSCE/CPSA examinations
- Facilitate clinical communications sessions
- Develop/organise assessment materials
Key objectives:
- Contribute to quality teaching delivery.
- Act as a resource for student engagement with evidence-based GP subjects.

Main Duties
Teaching Development & Implementation
Under supervision of academic tutors with module responsibility, duties include:
- Collaborate in designing and developing modules (online and in-person content).
- Deliver lectures and small-group sessions aligned with teaching objectives.
- Materials Preparation – Produce student study guides, notes, or reading assignments.
Assessments & Examinations
- Develop and refine examination questions for piloting.
- Contribute as invigilator/marker for CPSA, AKT written, and OSCE-style assessments.
- Provide narrative feedback in situ.
Programme Support & Enhancement
- Facilitate faculty development trainings for colleagues involved in the MBChB Programme.
- Carry out administrative tasks associated with teaching commitments.
- Actively participate in Continuing Professional Development linked to medical education.
- Contribute to public engagemental outreach (on review/supervision of external project leaders).

- Reflect on self-assessed teaching effectiveness through peer/student input.
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion as a role model.

Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Full regimen qualification (e.g. MBChB / MBBS or international equivalent).
- MRCGP certification.
- Active General Practitioner with current MRCGP experience.
- Foundation-year competencies (meeting GMC Good Medical Practice standards) evidenced.
- Proven teaching experience in undergraduate medical education.
- Tutoring of clinical resources (e.g., lecture notes, course materials).
- Knowledge of GMC Outcomes for Doctors & Medical Licensing Assessment.
- Routined ability to develop online teaching resources.
