Within the Cloud & Engineering Practice, our Senior Cloud Engineers play a pivotal role in helping public sector organizations develop highly available, reliable, resilient, and secure digital services. These professionals are primarily software engineers with a focus on the deployment and operational management of cloud-based services, rather than on functional software development. They are adaptable, comfortable working across disciplines such as DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and infrastructure architecture, ensuring optimal performance and security of cloud environments.
About The Role
The Senior Cloud Engineer at Made Tech will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud infrastructure solutions tailored to client needs. The role requires ensuring that these infrastructures are secure, scalable, and highly available, supporting the delivery of robust digital services. The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise in cloud environments and provide strategic guidance on best practices to internal teams and clients alike.
This position demands a strong foundation in software engineering, with an ongoing commitment to staying current with emerging cloud technologies. The Senior Cloud Engineer will collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, contributing to the development of cloud architectures and operational processes that align with industry standards and client requirements. Building credibility through relevant certifications and continuous learning is essential to this role.
The role also involves evangelizing cloud adoption, evaluating new cloud services and tools, and mentoring junior colleagues to foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess significant prior experience in cloud engineering, demonstrating a proven track record of deploying and managing cloud services effectively. A comprehensive understanding of major cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is essential. Candidates should have hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes, as well as modern software engineering practices.
Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with product managers, designers, and technical experts, is highly valued. Relevant cloud certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS DevOps Engineer, Azure DevOps Engineer, or GCP Professional Cloud Engineer are desirable, as they validate technical expertise and commitment to professional growth.
Additional desirable skills include familiarity with cloud vendor partner programs, well-architected frameworks, and knowledge of UK public sector technology standards and frameworks, such as the NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) and the Technology Code of Practice (TCoP). Proficiency in programming languages like Python, Bash, and JavaScript, as well as experience with Agile methodologies, Test Driven Development (TDD), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), will be advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver high-quality cloud-based technical solutions tailored to client requirements, ensuring scalability, performance, and security.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop cloud architectures that meet project specifications and industry standards.
- Deploy and manage cloud resources, containers, and related services using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Configure and maintain network security, access controls, and security practices to safeguard data and infrastructure assets.
- Implement automated processes for provisioning, monitoring, and scaling cloud resources, utilizing CI/CD pipelines to facilitate seamless application deployment.
- Monitor cloud infrastructure for performance issues, optimize resource utilization, and troubleshoot incidents proactively.
- Design and implement load balancing, caching, and content delivery solutions to enhance system availability and responsiveness.
- Develop and maintain backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity and data integrity.
- Create comprehensive runbooks, configuration management protocols, and standard operating procedures to streamline operations.
- Provide high-tier support for client applications and infrastructure, including participating in on-call rotations when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards and maintain necessary certifications to uphold security and operational excellence.
- Promote cloud best practices across teams, evaluate new cloud services, and share industry insights to foster continuous improvement.
- Mentor and line-manage junior team members, supporting their professional development and performance management.
