Role: Senior Commercial Lawyer (6-Month Fixed-Term Contract)
The Commercial Legal team seeks an experienced Senior Commercial Lawyer to join their ranks.
About the Team
Commercial Legal partners closely with business units to provide specialised legal, commercial, and risk management support, enabling confident decision-making. Responsibilities include:
- Shaping and negotiating client contracts
- Managing data, AI, and technology deals
- Evaluating partnerships and contractual risks
This role reports to the Commercial Legal Director, collaborating with Legal & Business Integrity, Baringa Enablement, and broader leadership. It is a team leadership position, meaning:
- Line-managing lawyers – setting priorities, developing talent, and supporting growth.
- Managing a caseload alongside weekly team oversight.
What You Will Do
- Lead and line-manage a team of commercial lawyers, including performance oversight and career development.
- Serve as a senior lawyer for complex digital contracts, covering areas such as data, cloud, AI, and technology implementation.
- Advise the wider Legal team and Baringa on best practices, continuous improvement, and training programs.
- Negotiate and draft contracts (e.g., One-off Services Agreements, Framework Agreements, Licence Agreements, Sub-contracts).
- Conduct contract risk assessments for senior management, escalating high-risk items to the relevant sector leads.
- Challenge and update Baringa’s Contract Risk Scorecard to reflect evolving positions.
- Collaborate with insurance brokers to ensure client contracts align with coverage parameters.
- Coach junior lawyers in legal drafting, negotiation, and commercial judgement.

This position requires firm- and partner-level coordination with teams across Baringa Enablement, including People, Finance, Data, IT, and Cybersecurity.
Key Responsibilities

- Uses technology tools (CLM platforms, legal databases) to enhance efficiency.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Legal Qualifications: Solicitor or barrister qualified in England & Wales or a Commonwealth country.
- Post-Qualification Experience: Minimum 6 years of relevant commercial law experience.
- Digital Contracting Focus: Deep, demonstrated expertise in digital contracts, including cloud, data, AI, and technology delivery.
- Negotiation & Client Management: Ability to handle complex discussions with influential international clients, banks, and law firm advisors.
- Leadership: Proven track record in leading and developing a team of lawyers, with strong stakeholder engagement.
- Risk Assessment: Strong commercial risk judgment, clear articulation of legal/non-legal risks.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to simplify complex issues for non-legal audiences.
- Resource Management: Highly organised, with experience prioritising in fast-paced environments while managing multiple responsibilities.
Preferred Advantages
- Experience developing precedents, playbooks, and procedure templates.
- Familiarity with legal tech (e.g., CLM tools, legal databases).
- Knowledge of data protection and emerging tech regulations.
