Opportunity:
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Commercial Manager to work on the Great Grid Partnership (GGP) with National Grid. Within our thriving Energy business under an Enterprise Agreement, this programme will cover the next 10 years. Numerous projects of differing value and duration are to be undertaken and completed as part of this.
Initially, you will play a key role in managing within the GGP Core Service team, focusing on commercial, procurement & finance activities. As the programme progresses into the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, this role will transition into directly supporting GGP project delivery and you will provide commercial support, management and leadership, ensuring that all aspects of project contract administration is managed in a timely and accurate manner.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a significant programme that will shape the UK’s Energy infrastructure for the future. The successful candidate will be joining an existing team of passionate and dedicated individuals.
We are looking for a Senior Commercial Manager who is commercially astute and delivery-focused, this combined with a sound knowledge of the construction industry. Specific experience in an overhead lines environment for National Grid desirable but not essential as strong commercial acumen and skills are deemed to be transferable.
You’ll have the ability to ensure standards and specifications are fully met. You’ll require an ability to work with senior management to set project and operational targets is essential. Excellent negotiation and diplomacy skills and the ability to make a sound business case recommendations to senior stakeholders.
The Role:
As a Senior Commercial Manager, you will:
- Active involvement in winning new work and developing appropriate commercial strategies to enable strong results and performance.
- Actively engage during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) initial stages and subsequent project delivery by developing appropriate strategies to optimise outcomes for various Projects.
- Develop and agree a commercial strategy which achieves budget and maximises profitability. Manage commercial opportunity and risk. Ensure commercial reporting procedures are robustly and timeously adhered to.
- Manage, coordinate, supervise and support the commercial teams in areas of personal development and advice on all commercial issues.
- Manage all commercial aspects including monthly reporting, end life forecasting, monthly project reviews and account settlement.
- Proactively manage procurement in line with our supply chain vision.
- Rigorous management of contractual processes.
- Proactively and collaboratively negotiate with the customer, National Grid, on all contractual matters and ensure timely resolution of the same.
- Input into management reports as appropriate and articulate management information in a clear and succinct manner.
- Maintain ownership and proactively close out old projects and legacy issues.
- Understand and promote Morgan Sindall core values.
- Keep abreast of change in Commercial legislation and cascade to wider Project teams as appropriate.
- Deliver appropriate contractual awareness training to the wider Project teams to equip all roles to succeed.
- Develop and embrace a lessons learnt culture to enable continuous improvement in all aspects of what we do.
- Self-driven, results orientated with a positive outlook and a growth mindset.
- Good management skills, with the ability to motivate employees to achieve high standards of compliance.
- Excellent organisational, planning and time management skills; able to manage projects simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality.
- Able to manage the monthly reporting process including cost value reporting (CVR).
- Experience using COINS. Experience in commercial management of sub-contractors including procurement, valuations and final accounts.
- Able to set up and manage direct labour, plant and materials on projects. Knowledge and experience of dispute resolution.

The Person:
The successful candidate will be joining an existing team of passionate and dedicated individuals.
- Educated to BSc in Quantity Surveying (or other equivalent commercially related discipline) and you have or will be working towards professional membership of an appropriate organisation (for example, RICS/CIOB).
- Experience of a Contract Management System (CEMAR, Fast Draft, etc.).
- Supervisory/management experience within a project commercial team.
- NEC 3 or 4 experiences essential.
- Established level of experience and can manage a team, whilst reporting into the Commercial Director for strategic and management guidance.

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.
Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
